It is important to mention that this research work was carried out during the semester September 2017 - February 2018 where students from A1 starter level of the Universidad Técnica de Ambato participated. To obtain a representative sample of the study population, four parallels corresponding to this level were randomly selected. These number of students were 119 and they were divided into two groups; the experimental group and the control group. These groups were examined through the pre-test and post-test. After applying these assessment instruments, the data analysis was carried out and it reflected significant progress in the development of writing skills through the use of portfolios. In addition, it was evidenced that the use of portfolios in the class helps the students to be more autonomous in their learning process since the portfolios help to provide a feedback of the tasks they perform and this is the reason why the portfolios benefit the development of the writing process and therefore to the improvement of written production. Due to these factors, the proposal of this research work was developed and it is focused on the use of activities to develop the writing process through the use of portfolios.Item Social networks as a tool in the English writing skill development(Universidad Técnica de Ambato. Dirección de Posgrado. Maestría en Enseñanza del Idioma Inglés como Lengua Extranjera, 2018-07) Garcés Villacrés, Mónica Alexandra; Iza Pazmiño, Sarah JacquelineThe research Project “SOCIAL NETWORKS AS A TOOL IN THE ENGLISH WRITING SKILL DEVELOPMENT” aimed to analyze how social networks influenced in the English writing skill development in students at higher education level. To determine the relationship between these two variables, several books magazines and articles were read in order to get enough information about each variable. A survey entailing ten questions was applied to twelve English teachers and two hundred ninety tree students at the Pre- intermediate level. The results were analyzed and tabulated carefully. Also, through the use of Spearman’s Rho test, it was possible to determine that there is enough statistical evidence to accept the alternative hypothesis, it means that the use of social networks influences in the English writing skill development. Furthermore, the results showed that a great number of students had problems to express their ideas in a written way in English. In addition, students think that the use of social networks such as Facebook and WhatsApp are useful tools to the improvement of the writing skill, however teachers do not use social networks for this purpose. The use of a handbook with different guided, controlled and free writing tasks was suggested in order to help students to improve their writing skill in English using Facebook and WhatsApp.
