Currently, interest in microalgae has increased due to their potential as a source of bioactive compounds that can be applied in functional foods and nutraceutical supplements. Research on pigments produced by these microorganisms is highly relevant. For example, lutein has antioxidant properties that are beneficial for eye health, and its importance in biotechnology has generated interest in its production under controlled conditions. In the present study, experimental cultures of Chlorella vulgaris grew in standard BBM medium and in medium with nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium concentrations reduced by fifty percent, under low and high light intensities: two thousand six hundred thirty-eight lux and five thousand two hundred sixteen lux, respectively. Cell density was monitored for twenty-two days to determine the best treatment, with the aim of adding two promoters under that condition for lutein production: sodium acetate and acetic acid. This carotenoid was quantified using spectrophotometric methods with ninety-six-well microplates. The results showed that cultures grown in standard medium under high light intensity reached the highest cell densities and showed a prolonged exponential phase. Lutein production was higher in treatments with an organic carbon source, although cultures without promoters also presented detectable amounts of lutein. The combination of a balanced medium and controlled light conditions proved to be efficient for maximizing biomass and the content of bioactive pigments.

The present study consisted of the processing and analysis of data from a metabolomics study using the nuclear magnetic resonance technique of six different cultivars of Tropaeolum tuberosum (mashua), whose results are published by Valle-Parra et al 2020: From morphological traits to the food fingerprint of Tropaeolum tuberosum through metabolomics by NMR. Data includes: cultivar ID (A-F); sample collection area (I, II and III); information on the content of 34 metabolites (in mM); and integration values of each resonance spectrum at an interval of 0.4 ppm (234 values per spectrum). These data were subjected to multivariable analysis by PCA revealing a grouping between cultivars A-B, C-D-E and F. These three subgroups coincided with the grouping of the analysis of the collection area. Subsequently, the performance of the machine learning classification models was evaluated: LDA, SVM and RF. The former had the lowest performance with a percentage accuracy range between 83.2 and 87.6, the second between 86.5 and 96.4, and RF had the best performance between 96.4 and 100. Finally, the nutraceutical contribution of the cultivars was evaluated, and they were ranked according to their content of amino acids, carbohydrates, organic acids, among other nutrients. In global and amino acid terms, cultivar F stood out for its superior contribution to the other cultivars; cultivar A has the highest content of organic acids, while cultivars B and D of carbohydrates.

This research was carried out with the purpose of optimizing the production of biosurfactant with amphipathic activity from Bacillus subtilis DS23, which has been characterized as one of the microorganisms that have the best performance when producing this type of compounds. The experimentation was carried out in a 5-liter bioreactor maintaining constant parameters such as pH at 6.5, temperature at 30 Celsius degrees and aeration in 1 volume of air per volume of medium per minute (vvm), working with speeds of agitation of 150, 200 and 300 revolutions per minute (rpm) being this the only parameter that was varied. It was shown that the production of biomass and bio-surfactant in a stirred tank bioreactor is strongly influenced by agitation. The best results of both biomass and biosurfactant were obtained at 300 rpm, agitation speed that was used to determine the parameters proposed in this investigation. Using the Humphrey dynamic method using air as an oxygen-carrying gas, the effect of dissolved oxygen in the medium on the growth and production of biosurfactant was assessed by estimating the volumetric oxygen transfer coefficient (KLa), the specific rate of oxygen consumption (qO2) and the oxygen transfer rate (VTO) obtaining 0.002 h-1, 0.079 mmol O2 for L * h and 0.312 h-1 respectively. It was decided to evaluate these parameters because they are key in aerobic crops, and they are intended to serve as scaling criteria in future research.
