(Universidad Técnica de Ambato. Facultad de Ingeniería Civil y Mecánica, Carrera de Ingeniería Civil., 2025-02) Guevara Ruiz, Edison Hernan; Cañizares Proaño, Byron Genaro
This project was designed with the objective of obtaining detailed and updated information on the condition of the roads within the urban area of the Izamba parish, which is part of the new history of the city of Ambato, corresponding to zone 27. In the information gathering phase, standardized technical sheets were used, which facilitated the calculation of the general condition of the roads, applying the pavement condition index (PCI). This index made it possible to classify and determine the level of severity of the faults found, in addition to evaluating the quality of the wearing course. To complement the analysis, soil tests and flexible pavement design tests (TPDA) were also carried out, with the objective of recommending the appropriate thicknesses for the structural pavement package on roads that have not yet been asphalted, an accurate database was prepared that will allow the preparation and implementation of an effective road maintenance plan, adapted to the specific needs of the area. To carry out this work, geo-referenced data were collected using a Global Positioning System (GPS), which made it possible to obtain exact coordinates of the locations to be evaluated. In addition, an exhaustive visual analysis was carried out to identify the main faults present in the road infrastructure. As a result of the project, an estimated budget was generated that covers the costs of road infrastructure maintenance, detailing the expenses associated with each type of deterioration found in the different pavement layers. This budget will serve as a key tool for the Municipality of Ambato, allowing it to make informed, data-driven decisions about necessary interventions on urban roads, thus optimizing the process of maintaining and improving the road network. This is expected to increase safety, public confidence, and foster the city's economic and social growth.

The main purpose of this project was to gather accurate information on the current condition of roads, sidewalks, and curbs in the Augusto N. Martínez parish in the city of Ambato, with the aim of improving the mobility of drivers and pedestrians. During the first phase, the required information was collected for a database that reflected the condition of sidewalks, curbs, and the different types of faults identified in the study area, using the Pavement Condition Index (PCI) according to type. In the second phase, the index facilitated the classification of faults and their severity levels, as well as the evaluation of the quality of the surface layer. This allowed for the creation of a detailed database to design and implement a road maintenance plan tailored to the specific needs of the area. For data collection, georeferenced surveys were conducted using a Global Positioning System (GPS), achieving precise coordinates of the evaluated points. Additionally, a thorough visual analysis was carried out to identify the main deficiencies in the road infrastructure. As a result, an estimated budget was developed, detailing the costs required for the preservation of the road infrastructure, with specific expenses allocated to each type of damage detected in the different pavement layers. This budget serves as a key tool for the Municipality of Ambato to make informed decisions on priority interventions in urban roads, optimizing maintenance and improvement processes. Through these actions, the goal is to increase road safety, strengthen citizen confidence, and promote the economic and social development of the city.

Given the advanced deterioration of the Danzapamba and San José de Barba la Y neighborhood roads, the current safety and road infrastructure standards do not meet the technical requirements necessary to guarantee their optimal serviceability, for which a comprehensive and sustainable maintenance plan is proposed. This responds directly to the urgent need for adequate, modern and efficient road infrastructure for the continued progress of the inhabitants to ensure their safety and that of road users in general. To establish an effective road maintenance plan, we began with a thorough assessment of the road's current condition. This critical stage involved techniques such as topographic surveying with the aid of a high-precision RTK instrument, as well as detailed traffic studies and laboratory soil analysis. The evaluation of the Pavement Index (PCI) complemented this information, allowing the existing deterioration to be quantified. With this data, an optimal structural package for flexible pavements was designed and a reference budget was prepared, thus ensuring an efficient and long-lasting road intervention. After a thorough analysis, it was established that the evaluated road has an extension of 5 km, which is paved in its entirety, and it is expected that in the next 20 years an average of 6792 vehicles/day will circulate on it. Considering these characteristics, the road was classified as a class I road. The soil studies indicated an average CBR index of 16.50 percent, classifying the soil as fair to good for subgrade use. Based on this data, the flexible pavement was designed with a thickness of 5 cm of asphalt layer, 20 cm of base and 20 cm of subbase, thus obtaining a value of 45 cm of structural package. Finally, an economic analysis was performed, resulting in an estimated total project cost of $685.945,65.

The supply of drinking water is of vital importance to all inhabitants worldwide, so the supply must be efficient and adequate, but currently the existing distribution system in the Jaloa el Rosario community does not provide the adequate service that users need, since the distribution system has fulfilled its useful life, therefore, the proposal to improve the drinking water system was made. It began with the delimitation of the study area that was facilitated by the president of the Jaloa el Rosario community, to later carry out a topographic survey with a drone, a survey was also carried out where the population registry was updated, through the survey carried out the quality of the service was also known and to know if the pressure of the water with which it reaches their homes is adequate, on the other hand, through field visits each of the components of the existing drinking water system was evaluated, through the evaluation it was determined that the system has many deficiencies since visible leaks could be seen in the pipes. Through the use of a pressure gauge, a hydraulic evaluation was carried out, where the existing pressures were measured. Finally, a proposal for improvement of the SDAP was developed, so that community users have a safe and efficient service, where the design period is 25 years, with a future population of 735 inhabitants. On the other hand, the design proposal was also modeled through an engineering program, modeling the system in a static and dynamic state. After the design proposal was made, a reference budget was developed for an amount of $135,167.90 US dollars, with its respective schedule where it is presented that for the construction of the design proposal it will be developed in a time of 5 months.

Sanitation systems play a fundamental role in the treatment of wastewater, health, environmental well-being and counteracting pollution. From this, the provision of the studied sector significantly improves the quality of life of human beings. However, in the parish of San Buenaventura, the Chile and Santa Barbara neighborhoods lack an optimal and efficient system. Therefore, the primary objective of this project was to design the sanitary sewer network. The project was divided into three fundamental stages, each one having specific methodologies that were implemented in the territory. The first was divided into a detailed topographic survey, the application of surveys and an analysis of the supply of drinking water. The second focused on the design of the sanitary sewer system following the Ecuadorian regulations, SENAGUA, the Bolivian Standard NB 688, and finally, on the "Standards for the Study and Design of Wastewater Systems for Populations Over 1000 Inhabitants." Finally, the third focused on the evaluation of cost analysis and construction programming. Based on the established parameters, a sewerage network was developed, comprising a total of 64 wells and 73 sections of pipes. This network has a total length of 4.08 kilometers and covers a catchment area of 54,805 hectares. After an exhaustive analysis, it was confirmed that the design of the sewerage system complies with current regulations. In addition, an estimate of the budget required for its construction was made, which amounts to 298,226.52 dollars.
In Ecuador, many developing communities face serious deficiencies in basic infrastructure, including the absence of sanitary sewage systems. This situation not only generates water contamination problems, but also an increase in waterborne diseases and serious damage to the environment. A clear example of this problem is the community of Hualcanga San Luis, where the lack of these essential services highlights the existing gaps in basic sanitation, mainly affecting rural and peri-urban areas, despite the efforts made by local governments to address these deficiencies. In this context, the main objective of this technical project is to design an integrated sanitary sewerage system and a wastewater treatment plant for the community. As a first stage, a detailed topographic survey was carried out using an RTK (Real Time Kinematic) system, which allowed obtaining accurate information of the terrain, ensuring an adequate analysis of the physical conditions of the intervention area. In addition, surveys were conducted with the local population in order to identify their specific needs and ensure that the proposed design responds to their real demands. Based on the information collected, a 3.24-kilometer sewerage network was designed, consisting of 76 inspection wells and 75 sections of pipe with varying diameters, including a 200-mm main pipe. A treatment plant was also designed that includes pretreatment, primary treatment, secondary treatment, and sludge drying, ensuring compliance with the country's regulatory standards. The total estimated budget for the project is US$339,461.60, with a completion time of approximately six months. The implementation of this system will not only significantly improve social welfare and reduce the incidence of disease in the community but will also contribute substantially to ensuring long-term environmental sustainability in the region.

A road infrastructure designed in accordance with current technical standards is crucial for promoting socioeconomic improvement of territorial connectivity and guaranteeing the safety of users. In this context, the objective of this study is formulating a comprehensive proposal of road maintenance of the road that connects the Danzapamba and San José de Barba La Y neighborhoods. This initiative arises due to the current structural and functional deficiencies pf the road, which compromise significantly improving road safety, vehicle mobility and pedestrian protection. For this purpose, a topographic survey was conducted using RTK equipment and drone. Additionally, vehicle counts were carried out over seven days a week and 24 hours a day. Subsequently, a visual inspection of existing failures was performed using the PCI (Pavement Condition Index) method, where each of the existing failures in the pavement were evaluated. Based on this information a maintenance proposal was developed along with the preparation of the referential budget. The results an TPDA of 3001 vehicles/day and a projected TPDAf of 6792 vehicles/day a 20-year period. Along the 5 km stretch, a total of 44 failures were indefinitely, predominantly longitudinal and transverse cracks, likewise, through laboratory tests, it was determined that the soil is a silty sand through the SUCS classification and granular material of group A-2-4 in the AASTHO classification. For the pavement design, a structural layer with a total thickness of 45 cm was calculated, leading to a referential budget of $685.945,65.

In recent years, Ecuador has tried to improve its competitiveness compared to other countries in its road infrastructure, however, not all areas of the country have managed to optimize their road network. Without going any further, the quality of the Cotopaxi Road network has been overshadowed by its neighboring provinces, which is why the need arises to address new projects that contribute to the evolution of the infrastructure. To contribute to this objective, road studies were carried out following the processes dictated by the MTOP 2003 regulations. Starting with the survey of the topographic strip using an RTK device that revealed that the road was in mountainous terrain. The traffic study indicated that the TPDA for a design period of 20 years would be 778 vehicles/day, classifying the road as a CLASS III collector. With this information, the geometric redesign was carried out, adjusting the existing road to a new layout that complies with the parameters suggested by the standard and also without exceeding very large cut and fill areas. The structural package was designed based on the AASHTO-93 Method using the design CBR obtained in the soil study, finally the minimum and recommended thicknesses for subbase, base and asphalt layer are configured. Finally, the road design proposal was evaluated, and an estimated budget was developed, providing a clear view of the resources required and facilitating accurate planning for future project implementation.

At present the system does not provide a service of quality, continuity and efficiency, because it has been operating for 29 years and is at the limit of its useful life, in order to optimize the system this research is carried out. It began with a topographic survey, using the photogrammetry technique, technical visits were made in the field, where the physical evaluation of the state of the components of the system was carried out. Subsequently, the hydraulic evaluation was developed where, with the help of a pressure gauge, the pressures in the different connections were known and the system was modeled with the help of hydraulic simulation software in both static and dynamic conditions. After analyzing the deficiencies, it was concluded that a redesign proposal is necessary. A proposal was made to redesign the system, which is made up of a 5.11km pipeline network for a design period of 25 years and covers an area of 86.60ha of surface. The design was carried out under static and dynamic modeling in the most critical conditions, based on design parameters that comply with national regulations for the rural sector. As a result, the project contains evaluation matrices, calculation report, network plans, implementation of pressure-reducing valves and a water disinfection system, along with a technical economic analysis that includes a referential budget for the execution of the project.

With the need to have an updated database and with it a road maintenance plan, this project was developed with the objective of obtaining updated information on the status of the roads that make up zone 16 in the city of Ambato. In this project, georeferenced data was collected using a Global Positioning System (GPS), as well as visual analysis of failures in road infrastructure. Technical sheets were used to collect the necessary data and calculate the condition of the roads using the pavement condition index (PCI) method, identifying the level of severity of the failures and evaluating the quality of the wearing course. In addition, a reference budget was prepared for each type of failure found, taking into account the items necessary for the maintenance and repair of roads, sidewalks and curbs in the study area. This resulted in a series of failures found in the three types of pavements, the majority of medium and low severity, even so, with the calculation of the PCI it was established that there are good and very good classification roads, concluding that these roads need a periodic maintenance, all this was reflected in the database that was obtained with the record of all the faults found. In addition, a reference budget of $104,226.45 US dollars was estimated for the maintenance plan. This will be delivered by the Technical University of Ambato to the Municipal GAD of Ambato.
