Abstract
This research aimed to design, model and compare four moment connection configurations: WUF-W, RBS, External Diaphragm and End Plate 4E, in a seismic-resistant steel structure, applying the criteria of AISC 358-16, AISC 341-16, AISC 360-16 and the CIDECT Design Guide N°9. The reference building corresponds to a three-story steel office structure with a concrete basement, located in the Calderón parish, Quito, Ecuador. The work was developed in three phases: manual design applying capacity design; verification through specialized software; and a comparative analysis considering structural performance, fabrication cost, and constructability. The WUF-W, RBS and End Plate 4E connections are prequalified by AISC 358-16 specifically for wide-flange (W-shape) columns, so their initial application with concrete-filled tube (CFT) columns exceeds the prequalification range of the standard, which was confirmed by the inconsistent results obtained in the software. For this reason, the column was replaced with a W-shape profile in these three connections. The External Diaphragm connection was modeled with the original CFT column, as it has specific technical support according to the CIDECT guide. The results showed that all four configurations met the required checks. The WUF-W proved to be the most efficient for W-shape columns, with a cost of $406. For CFT columns, the External Diaphragm is the most suitable option, with $594. The End Plate 4E presented the highest cost ($829), although it reduces field welding work.
