Abstract
Although the influence of size effect on the mechanical properties of concrete has been a
subject of study for decades without any regulatory standards yet in place, this project focused
on describing this behavior in permeable concrete reinforced with synthetic polypropylene
microfibers (MPP), designing simple and reinforced mixtures to achieve a strength of 2.3–13
MPa at 28 days. To this end, prismatic test specimens of three sizes were prepared and evaluated
for flexural strength (ASTM C1609), and cylinders of two sizes were evaluated for compressive
strength (NTE INEN 1573). The results confirmed that both the maximum flexural strength
(proportionality limit of the matrix) and the residual strengths (dependent on the effective
fibers) decrease as the size of the test specimen increases, and the decrease in compressive
strength was also verified when comparing large cylinders with small ones, validating that the
size effect consistently affects permeable concrete in all the mechanical properties evaluated.
