Abstract

Silica fume emerges as a viable alternative to enhance the mechanical properties of concrete. In this context, the present study evaluates the effect of silica fume on the compressive strength, indirect tensile strength, and the theoretical calculation of the modulus of elasticity of 450 kg/cm² concrete. The methodology was divided into three phases: the first involved the characterization of fine and coarse aggregates according to standardized technical norms; the second included the concrete mix design following the ACI 211.4R method, using three silica fume replacement ratios of cement: 3%, 8%, and 12%; finally, the third phase comprised the evaluation of mechanical properties through compressive and indirect tensile strength tests, as well as the theoretical calculation of the modulus of elasticity according to ACI-based formulas. Through an analysis of variance (ANOVA), it was determined with 95% confidence that there is a statistically significant difference between the control concrete and the one modified with 3% silica fume. This percentage led to an increase of 26.1% in compressive strength and 28.15% in indirect tensile strength. Likewise, the theoretical calculation of the modulus of elasticity showed that adding 3% silica fume as a partial cement replacement improves the material's stiffness. According to the applied formulas, the increases were 3.41% (based on authors such as Mostofinejad and Nozhati), 12.28% (ACI 318), and 9.33% (ACI 363), all in comparison to the control concrete. These results confirm that silica fume, when used in moderate proportions, contributes to improved elastic behavior of concrete, which is particularly relevant in structures requiring high deformation capacity under controlled loading conditions. In conclusion, the results suggest that the controlled use of silica fume can represent a significant improvement in the quality of concrete used in buildings and infrastructure, promoting greater durability and strength within the context of Ecuadorian construction
