    Urban lighting is a key element in ensuring safety, promoting the appropriation of public spaces, and encouraging their use during nighttime hours. In the central park of Santa Rosa Parish, located in Ambato Canton, deficiencies in the distribution, quality, and variety of lighting have negatively affected users' perception of safety and limited activities related to recreation, social interaction, and permanence within the public space. In response to this issue, the objective of this research was to design a line of urban luminaires equipped with a hybrid system that combines solar energy and connection to the public electrical grid, aimed at improving safety perception and encouraging the use of public spaces. This study was developed within the research line focused on design, production, materials, identity, sustainability, and applied technologies. A mixed-methods approach was employed, supported by Design Thinking and participatory design methodologies, allowing users' needs and expectations to be incorporated into the design process. Data were collected through surveys, interviews, observation sheets, and field mapping, which enabled the identification of existing problems, user requirements, and opportunities for intervention.

    Diseño de Mobiliario Urbano Inteligente con Integración IoT para el Cantón Baños de Agua Santa, Ecuador

    This project analyzes the problem of informational street furniture in the Baños de Agua Santa canton. The current infrastructure presents certain deficiencies in the areas of local cultural identity and digital integration, which generates disorientation for tourists and a poor tourism experience. Taking these needs into account, the development of an informational totem with IoT integration was proposed, with the objective of improving functionality, accessibility, and the user experience within the canton's public spaces. The research employed a mixed-methods approach, using a descriptive, nonexperimental design. This involved the application of on-site observation sheets and surveys of users of this public space. Furthermore, the design process was organized using the UserCentered Design (UCD) methodology and the implementation of the Delft Guide, thus focusing the study from contextual research to the final proposal. The evaluation of proposals was carried out using the Harris Matrix with the participation of specialists in the field of Industrial Design. The project resulted in an informational totem called Ignis, whose form is based on a morphological analysis of the different tourist attractions of the Baños canton: the Pailón del Diablo (Devil's Cauldron), the Casa del Árbol (Tree House), the church, and the Cascada de la Virgen (Virgin's Waterfall). It also incorporates characteristic local materials such as volcanic stone and bamboo, joined together with metal. Its IoT technological feature is achieved through the application of augmented reality via an app and an interactive screen, thus offering an attractive solution for smart tourism.

    Diseño de un sistema expositor móvil para la protección y comercialización itinerante de flores eternas en espacios públicos

    The itinerant trade of preserved flowers in Ambato, Ecuador, faces a structural problem: the street vendors, who comprise 74.8% of the self-employed workforce in this sector, display their products in an improvised manner, which fails to protect the merchandise and, even more so, their working conditions. Dust, solar radiation, and rain damage the goods; workdays of up to eleven hours without the use of ergonomic equipment result in musculoskeletal injuries in a group whose income depends on the visual quality of their product. This research falls within the design, materials, production, identity, sustainability, and applied technologies research line of the Technical University of Ambato and employs a qualitative approach and an action research methodology, combining direct observation, semi-structured interviews, individual validation and document analysis to develop a design proposal based on empirical evidence obtained from the vendors. The Design Thinking methodology structures the process in five phases: empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test, ensuring that each decision is based on needs verified in the field. The scientific innovation lies in the FLORAXIS mobile display system: a modular metal structure with a transparent enclosure, internal shelves, and differentiated wheels for irregular surfaces, whose dimensions are determined using Latin American anthropometric data (Ávila Chaurand et al., 2007). Validation with a real user yielded a score of 86 out of 90, confirming that the design has a positive impact on the protection and mobile sale of preserved flowers in public spaces in Ambato.

    This project aimed to design urban furniture made of fiberglass with the goal of optimizing rest areas on the Huachi Chico campus of the Technical University of Ambato. The study addressed issues related to the limited availability of functional and comfortable outdoor furniture, the insufficient use of green spaces, and inadequate ergonomic conditions by the university community. These factors affect social interaction, as well as user permanence and the overall experience within campus recreational environments. For the present project, the method applied was a mixed-method research approach, which was combined with direct observation, some interview and surveys with specialists, also a review of the rhetorical foundations related to urban furniture, fiberglass materials including ergonomics and user centered design. The design guided the development process, allowing the investigation know the user needs, which in this case includes all the community including teaches, students, and any other user in the area; therefore the validation process went along the establishment of design requirements, the general conceptual alternatives, and the successful validation was made through expert evaluation with the use of the Harris Profile method. The final design consists basically of an organic urban seating system that integrates most of the users with the natural extension of the landscape through accommodation developed based on the around existing trees. The material selected is fiberglass because of its incredible durability, the low maintenance requirements, the resistance it shows to environmental changes and different conditions, and the capacity to adapt to complex forms. The proposal also incorporates a color palette which was inspired by natural elements of the local landscape, that promotes visual harmony with the campus green areas. The findings show that this type of seating furniture does not just check the boxes for ergonomic and aesthetics, but it also meets functionality while enhancing user comfort and encouraging longer stays in outdoor spaces and improving social interaction among students. The project concludes that the implementations of fiberglass furniture in urban seating can contribute in such a significant way to optimize the university resting areas and boost the overall quality of outdoor campus environments.

    Influencia de las configuraciones morfológicas en el diseño del alerón trasero en vehículos de competencia en altitud elevada

    The present research project addresses the effect of morphological configurations on the aerodynamic behavior of spoilers in non-homologated competition vehicles under highaltitude conditions, a challenge for rally motorsports in the province of Tungurahua. The importance of the topic lies in understanding how the shape and geometric layout of the spoiler influence its performance and visual perception. On the other hand, the reduction of atmospheric density in mountainous environments implies a decrease in the spoiler's downforce, risking the automobile's stability and safety. Local practice tends to resort to empirical adaptations that indicate a gap regarding contextualized design. From a methodological standpoint, the development of the study is based on a mixed quasiexperimental approach with a cross-sectional format, supported by qualitative expert criteria, and centered on the case study of the Peugeot 207 category T3. Physical data collection of the component in its natural state was carried out through open observation for its subsequent digitization and surface reconstruction with geometric continuity using 3D modeling software. Proceeding, through computational fluid dynamics simulations, to evaluate the behavior of the spoiler, using a normalization based on the inverted profile NACA 4421. Integrated into the institution's Design, Materials, and Production research line, the innovation concludes with a preliminary design proposal supported by bibliographical evidence. The final morphological configuration is composed of a Gurney flap, endplates, and a surface micro-texturing of alternate dimples that act as a passive control system, thereby improving the aerodynamic behavior of the spoiler.

    Children's mathematical learning is very important for the development of logical thinking, although this extensive process is distorted in its progress by dyscalculia, a specific learning difficulty of a neurobiological nature, which affects the school population. The relevance and relevance of what is proposed is given by the urgent need to make an inclusive education effective that is accompanied by obvious and manipulative pedagogical supports, since for these children memorizing is not enough. This academic work is in line with the line of research of Design, Materials, Production, Identity, Sustainability and Applied Technologies. To account for this situation, a qualitative exploratory-descriptive methodology was adopted, based on a literature review and field study. A detailed analysis of the use of materials was carried out in two psychopedagogical centers in Ambato. The collection of empirical data was carried out through interviews with teachers and educational psychologists, direct observation of the interaction between the child and the resources and a structural analysis of the teaching materials that exist with specific assessment matrices oriented to industrial design. Through significant scientific innovation and a varied approach, the research presents a new organized system of design proposals for the creation of future teaching tools. These criteria, properly classified into ergonomics, morphology, visual perception, evolution of cognitions, emotional dimension and adaptability, are useful and important. This approach becomes a valuable support that allows us to move from playful resources to cognitive scaffolding; that is, a design is developed that will control the mental load and help develop the teaching of arithmetic.

    This project focuses on the design of a playful object to stimulate fine motor skills in older adults, aiming to help maintain their motor and cognitive abilities through dynamic, functional activities adapted to their needs. The initiative arose in response to the decline in manual coordination and loss of motor precision identified in older adults residing at the Sagrado Corazón de Jesús nursing home in the city of Ambato, a situation that affects their autonomy and performance in daily activities A methodological research process was developed using Design Thinking, which included a literature review, direct observation, and interviews with professionals to determine the physical, cognitive, and emotional needs of the elderly population. To address these needs, accessible, ergonomic, and aesthetically pleasing therapeutic tools must be developed to motivate and engage users. The solution proposed in the research is the design of the play object "Ludde," created to promote fine motor skills and reinforce cognitive abilities through recognition, classification, and manipulation of modular pieces. The product allows users to practice pincer grasp, cylindrical grip, and hand-eye coordination. In creating the design, ergonomics, functionality, and aesthetics we considered, adapting the physical and cognitive capabilities to ensure user interaction. In this sense, the project demonstrates how industrial design can offer solutions focused on holistic well-being, providing tools that strengthen autonomy, motor skills, and cognitive development through playful experiences adapted to the realities of older adults.

    Diseño de una estación modular meteorológica para la integración y protección de nodos sensores destinados al monitoreo de variables ambientales en el cantón Baños de Agua Santa

    This degree project addresses the design of a modular meteorological station for the integration and protection of sensor nodes intended for monitoring environmental variables in the Baños de Agua Santa canton. Faced with operational issues caused by severe climate conditions such as high humidity (87-91%), frequent rainfall reaching 2,755 mm/year, and eventual volcanic ash falls from the Tungurahua volcano, the objective focused on materializing a physical structure that acts as a protective shield for low-cost sensors. Methodologically, a mixed approach with qualitative predominance and a projectapplied orientation was adopted. An analytical-synthetic process was executed, comprising the contextual characterization of the territory, the three-dimensional measurement of the electronic components (DHT22, MQ-135, and GPS sensors, among others), and semi-structured interviews conducted with ten experts from the industrial design and telecommunications fields. As a main result, the systemic and volumetric configuration of a micro-station was developed, dividing it into distinct functional blocks or chunks (designated as Gateway, Urban, and Mirador modules). These subsystems were manufactured via 3D printing using Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate (ASA) filament, strategically selected through Ashby's methodology due to its high resistance to UV radiation and weathering. Finally, the prototype's relevance was validated through expert judgment, achieving high approval ratings in criteria such as hydraulic runoff, passive ventilation, modularity, and manufacturing viability, demonstrating the effectiveness of industrial design morphological solutions in safeguarding local technological hardware exposed to aggressive Andean microclimates.

    This research analyzes the relationship between the user and the automotive product from an industrial design perspective, highlighting the importance of aesthetic differentiation and sensory design as fundamental elements for generating meaningful experiences. In a context of constant sociocultural change, it studies how the visual, tactile, emotional, and functional characteristics of automobiles influence users' perception, satisfaction, and identification with the product. Using a phenomenological approach, it delves into the experiences that arise during the userproduct interaction, exploring how people perceive, feel, and interpret vehicles beyond their utilitarian function. To this end, a field study was conducted in micro-workshops in the city of Ambato, Tungurahua province, involving users, technicians, managers, and operators, whose experiences provided insight into the reality of local automotive design. The study was developed using an applied methodology with a mixed-methods approach, a descriptive scope, and a propositional character, combining data collection and analysis techniques to obtain reliable results. As a contribution, a user-product sensory interpretation guide is proposed, aimed at strengthening design processes by incorporating criteria related to visual perception, tactile experience, emotional interpretation, and functional validation of automobiles. The conclusion is that a car represents an experience where design, engineering, and emotions converge. In this sense, the research demonstrates that understanding the user's sensory experience allows for the development of more human, innovative, and competitive products, capable of generating meaningful connections with people and effectively responding to their needs and expectations.

    Diseño y construcción de moldes ergonómicos y funcionales para mejorar la eficiencia en la fabricación de jabones artesanales

    This thesis project aimed to design and build an ergonomic and practical mold for making homemade soap. The research stemmed from problems identified in traditional molds, such as product sticking during demolding, material loss, worker fatigue, and, given the final product's limitations, its lack of standardization. To address these issues, an industrial design proposal was developed, taking into account ergonomics, functionality, modularity, and sustainability. The research employed a mixed-methods approach, utilizing direct observation, interviews, surveys, and ergonomic studies to identify user needs and the characteristics of the production process. The entrepreneurial methodology applied methodological frameworks from Design Thinking, User-Centered Design, and Product Engineering, enabling the generation, evaluation, and improvement of design solutions through 3D modeling, prototyping, and functional validation. Thus, an ergonomic mold prototype with handles was designed and built, its shape adapted to the user's hands. A mechanism was incorporated to facilitate demolding and cleaning, and a modular design was implemented to allow for variations in soap sizes and shapes. Finally, storage and transport were also addressed. Validation showed 92% compliance with the requirements, demonstrating improved usability, reduced physical effort, and increased efficiency in the production process. It was determined that, through the application of industrial design, a viable and innovative proposal for the artisanal production of soaps could be provided, enhancing both the user experience and the quality of the final product.
