The aim of this study is to identify management competences and abilities from authorities of academic and administrative units in the Superior Education Institutions of Ecuador. This study has been done in the Technical University of Ambato. An exploratory investigation reflected inefficient management models considering competences and abilities. Through the application of surveys to servants, workers and teachers from the University, it was demonstrated the lack of management competences and abilities from the authorities of academic and administrative units. For this reason, it is suggested to design a management model which includes management competencies and abilities. This is the reason for the directors of the University to fulfill the institutional objectives and to develop a better than human talent management and improve the management of human talent and the fulfillment of institutional objectives.
