The objective of this experimental investigation is to evaluate the efficiency of crushed brick as filtering material in the treatment of wastewater, by analyzing the parameters: Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD5), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and Sulphides. Once the results were obtained and analyzed, the efficiency of the filter was determined and compared with the values of permissible limits specified for Discharge to the Public Sewerage of the Unified Text of Secondary Legislation of the Ministry of the Environment (TULSMA). For the development of the project, the tannery "PROMACC", of the City of Ambato, was chosen as the study site, from where the residual water was collected. A metal structure was made for the filter, where the 55-gallon storage tank was placed, which through a 1 m pipe reaches the plastic container that contains the filtering material, with dimensions of 57 x 42 cm. To ensure the proper functioning of the filter, a constant flow rate of 0.105 l / min was used. During the filtration process, 10 samples of raw water and filtered water were obtained for later analysis in a certified laboratory of environmental services the parameters indicated above. Based on the results, it was determined that the use of crushed brick as filtering material has reduce the levels of contamination of the effluent from a tannery in minimum percentages.
