The leather goods industry in the province of Tungurahua generates large amounts of leather waste that is rarely reintroduced into the production cycle, posing an environmental problem and representing a missed design opportunity. This project, titled “Design of a Collection of Transformable Men’s Bags Using Folding Techniques and the Reuse of Leather Scraps,” aimed to design a collection of transformable men’s bags for the company Lama Glama, focusing on functionality, adaptability, and contemporary aesthetics through the use of folding techniques and the reuse of leather scraps. The research was conducted using a qualitative approach and an integrative project methodology. The sample consisted of 20 male university professors aged 30 to 60 from the School of Design and Architecture at the Technical University of Ambato, selected through non-probabilistic convenience sampling. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with designers and master artisans, observation sheets were used to determine the viability of reused leather, and experimentation sheets were used to evaluate the selected folding techniques, employing the Design Thinking methodology as the creative core of the design process. The results showed that users prioritize functionality, durability, and a minimalist aesthetic. Furthermore, the feasibility of reused leather and the effectiveness of modular and structural folding techniques for developing transformable accessories were demonstrated. As a result, a collection of six men’s bags was designed, demonstrating that the reuse of leather scraps constitutes an innovate and sustainable strategy that meets the needs of the professional user and incorporates principles of the circular economy into the contemporary design of men’s accessories.

For centuries, the Amazonian Kichwa people of the Tena canton, in the province of Napo, have developed a system of traditional knowledge associated with the technique of weaving using lizán fiber from the palm tree (Carludovica palmata); the transmission of this knowledge across generations is currently at a critical risk of extinction. The aim of this research was to analyze the artisanal weaving techniques using lizán fiber of the Amazonian Kichwa people of the Tena canton based on ethnographic documentation, with a view to identifying their potential for application in contemporary textile design as a strategy for the preservation and revitalization of intangible cultural heritage. Methodologically, the research was conducted using a qualitative approach and through ethnographic fieldwork in the community of Aguapungo. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with master artisans, along with participant observation and the systematization of photographic records of the production processes. The sample consisted of active artisans from the Kichwa community in the Tena canton who are skilled in traditional weaving techniques. Five stages of the production process and four fundamental weaving techniques were documented: 1x1, 2x2, and 2x1 interlacing, and the ashanga stitch, which together form a textile language in which each of the techniques studied holds cultural and symbolic meanings within the Sacha Runa Yachay worldview. It is evident that technical mastery lies in the hands of artisans over fifty years of age, creating a scenario of risk of generational collapse. The design experimentation phase yielded three prototypes, which demonstrated the high potential for integrating this knowledge into contemporary design proposals. It is concluded that lizán fiber weaving techniques constitute a living cultural heritage that, when ethically integrated with contemporary textile design, can become a powerful instrument for cultural revitalization and sustainable economic development for Amazonian Kichwa communities.

The present study aimed to develop a women's denim collection with surface treatments inspired by the biomimicry of local flora for OFICIO 11 CIA. LTDA. To achieve this, research through design combined theoretical analysis with the exploration of biomimicry, enabling the creation of a jeanswear line with an innovative identity capable of standing out among garments that often become similar to one another. To achieve the first specific objective, a theoretical foundation of the main topics of this study was developed, including textile design, denim, biomimicry, innovation, and the corresponding finishing techniques. The compilation of theories and concepts facilitated the understanding of arguments that reveal how these elements relate to each other to generate proposals with a distinctive visual identity. Regarding the second specific objective, through a mixed-method approach, preferences were identified by analyzing qualitative and quantitative data obtained from interviews conducted with seven experts in the fields of design and biology, as well as surveys directed at the target audience, reaching 104 participants. The findings validated the need to incorporate surface treatments together with elements from nature as an effective approach for outfit development. As a response to the third specific objective, the collection called Fiorefosis was developed, based on a biomimetic methodology applied to textile design. It integrated nature observation, textile experimentation with surface treatments, the development of technical sheets, and aesthetic compositions inspired by three local flora species from Ambato. This process enabled the validation of results and the definition of criteria that guided the materialized proposals of the study.
This research, entitled "Analysis of Manuela Sáenz's Clothing as a Discourse of Power in the Sociopolitical Context of Gran Colombia," studies Manuela Sáenz's attire to understand her role within the Latin American republican process of the 19th century. The study sought to establish political, social, and cultural meanings. Furthermore, it identified that traditional historiography has devoted little attention to clothing as a tool for constructing political identities. The figure of Manuela Sáenz has frequently been approached from a romantic perspective, relegating to the background the study of her visual representation and the strategic use of her clothing within a context marked by power relations and patriarchal norms. The research was developed from an interdisciplinary approach, one that articulates history, costume design, gender studies, and the theory of symbolic power. Methodologically, a qualitative approach of a descriptive and interpretive nature was used, based on a bibliographic and documentary review, an analysis of images, and interviews with specialists in history and historical costume design. Image analysis sheets were also used to examine the formal, symbolic, and morphological elements present in Manuela Sáenz's clothing. The results confirmed that Manuela Sáenz's attire functioned as a strategy of political representation and symbolic legitimation within a sociopolitical context characterized by the exclusion of women from formal spaces of power. The appropriation of elements associated with the military uniform, the construction of a visual silhouette associated with authority, and the incorporation of republican codes allowed her to create a public image that challenged traditional 19th-century models of femininity.

This research explores the application of textures on recycled denim as a therapeutic tool aimed at promoting emotional well-being, recognizing the importance of developing textile design proposals that integrate sustainability, creativity, and sensory perception. The study was prompted by the growing volume of textile waste and the limited exploration of recycled denim as a medium for emotional expression within therapeutic design. The starting point was clear: to apply textures to recycled denim as a therapeutic resource to contribute to emotional well-being. The theoretical foundations of therapeutic design—specifically those related to sustainability and emotional perception—were reviewed. Work was also conducted directly on the material, employing various textile intervention techniques applied to recycled denim. The approach was qualitative and experimental. Observation and experimentation sheets were used to record what each texture produced visually, to the touch, and in expressive terms. The samples resulting from this process were organized into a textile catalog. The findings from the textile experimentation demonstrate that textures are capable of evoking quite specific emotions and sensory experiences. This highlights that recycled denim goes beyond its value as a sustainable material. As a tool for wellbeing, textile design has more to offer than has been explored so far.

This study analyzes the co-design methods used with older adults in the Picaihua Parish, with the aim of understanding their contribution to the creative process and their productive participation in the artisanal design of accessories woven with Murano beads. The study begins by identifying three problems: the gradual disappearance of ancestral craft skills, the deterioration of fine motor skills in older adults, and unemployment affecting this vulnerable group. Methodologically, the research was conducted through a co-design perspective, grounded in co-creation. Semi-structured interviews, observation sheets, and group workshops were used, conducted with the elderly members of the Picaihua Association at the parish GAD facilities. This procedure enabled the documentation of Murano bead weaving techniques as an important craft within the community. The results demonstrated that the co-creation method promotes the active participation of older adults in community spaces, enhancing their creative and productive abilities through the creation of accessories. This confirms that co-design is a useful methodological tool for highlighting the artisanal wisdom of older adults, preserving techniques, and creating opportunities for active participation that benefit both their well-being and the neighborhood’s cultural memory. It is concluded that codesign is an effective methodological tool for bringing the artisanal knowledge of older adults to the forefront, safeguarding techniques that are in danger of extinction, and creating opportunities for active participation that benefits both the cultural memory of the parish and the well-being of older adults.

This study focuses on the design of a collection of ergonomic footwear for pregnant women, developed in collaboration with the “Ricky Sport” communitybased business in the city of Ambato. The identified problem stems from local products that do not take into account the physiological and biomechanical changes women undergo during pregnancy, which leads to physical discomfort and a loss of independence. The main objective was to develop a comprehensive solution that combines principles of biomechanics, preventive ergonomics, and the selection of technical materials to improve the quality of life for users. The methodology employed a mixed-methods approach, integrating diagnostic surveys and the use of 3D scanning technologies, which allowed for the identification of an average 8% increase in metatarsal circumference and critical changes in the plantar arch. As a result, a collection was designed based on gradually increasing last sizes, easy-access closure systems, and cushioning structures that optimize pressure distribution. The conclusions highlight that the implementation of specialized footwear not only prevents musculoskeletal pathologies but also enhances the safety and emotional well-being of pregnant women. This technical proposal demonstrates that the fusion of academic design and local manufacturing enables the creation of products with high functional value and competitiveness in the Ecuadorian footwear sector.

This study analyzes the collaborative networks of Tungurahua Fashion Week (TFW), a fashion event held in the province of Tungurahua, Ecuador, across its three editions (2023, 2024, and 2025). The study stems from the need to understand how relationships are structured and fostered among the actors that make up the regional fashion ecosystem: textile and footwear companies, designers, creative collectives, academic institutions, and public agencies. The research adopted a qualitative approach using an inductive method, applying two instruments: semi-structured interviews with eighteen key actors and documentary records compiled from verified institutional sources. The results were validated through triangulation of sources, cross-referencing data from the interviews, institutional documentation, and the theoretical framework of collaborative networks, social capital, and creative ecosystems. The findings reveal that the TFW network is configured as an egocentric network with the Provincial Government of Tungurahua as the central node, accompanied by key intermediary nodes such as CorpoAmbato and the Ninari Foundation. The network has gone through three phases: emergence with informal links, consolidation with initial formal agreements, and institutionalization with trademark registration and national coordination. The network has a positive impact on the local fashion ecosystem by generating social capital, transferring international technical knowledge, and enhancing Tungurahua’s regional profile. However, structural limitations remain: dependence on the central hub, exclusion of peripheral creative actors, and a disconnect between academic and productive approaches.
