Abstract
To reduce the environmental impact of traditional stabilization, the technical feasibility of corn cob ash (CCA) was evaluated. Through XRF, the CCA (calcined at >400°C, with a 77.5% yield) showed potassium (32.03%) and phosphorus (7.89%), which reduce plasticity, as well as silicon, magnesium, and calcium, which generate cementitious compounds. The objective was to verify whether CCA optimizes the physical-mechanical behavior and bearing capacity of the soil, promoting the valorization of agro-industrial waste. Two soil samples were collected from Ecuador: Amazon/Oriente (S1) and Highlands/Sierra (S2). Their physical and mechanical properties (moisture content, Atterberg limits, modified Proctor, and CBR) were evaluated by comparing a control sample against three variations with 2.0%, 2.5%, and 3.5% CCA substitution. The tests demonstrated physical-mechanical improvements in both soils upon incorporating CCA. Regarding consistency, the dosages (2.0% to 3.5%) reduced the liquid limit (LL) and increased the plastic limit (PL), thereby decreasing the plasticity index (PI). In the Modified Proctor test, the optimum moisture content increased, but the maximum dry density varied depending on the material: it decreased in S1 and increased in S2. Finally, with 3.5% CCA, the CBR of S1 rose from 3.0% to 5.8%, and that of S2 from 22.90% to 34.20%, optimizing their geotechnical suitability for subgrades. In conclusion, corn cob ash (CCA) is an effective stabilizer for the evaluated soils. Its incorporation significantly improves their physical-mechanical properties and valorizes a local agro-industrial waste, establishing itself as a sustainable and viable alternative for highway and geotechnical engineering.
