Abstract

Poor sleep quality and low physical activity are common risk factors among professional drivers, attributable to the sedentary nature of their occupation and prolonged work hours. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between sleep quality and physical activity levels in professional drivers. A descriptivecorrelational, cross-sectional study was conducted on 50 taxi drivers (mean age 51.42 years), using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index to measure sleep and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire to quantify physical activity. Results revealed predominantly poor sleep quality (mean Pittsburgh index score = 10.10). A moderate, negative, and statistically significant correlation was found between total energy expenditure and the sleep quality score (rho = -0.336, p = 0.017). This finding indicates that higher levels of physical activity are associated with a better subjective perception of sleep. Physical activity emerges as a relevant non-pharmacological strategy for physiotherapy, suggesting the need to design multimodal (aerobic and strength) interventions tailored to the occupational setting to improve driver wellbeing and reduce fatigue-related risks.
