Abstract

This research, entitled “Documentary Record of Traditional Construction Techniques in Buildings Around the Central Plaza of Quisapincha, Ecuador,” was developed to study and analyze the architectural transformations caused by the substitution of vernacular materials with contemporary construction systems. This study focuses on documenting and evaluating the construction systems characteristic of vernacular architecture, contributing to the recognition of built heritage and the traditional construction knowledge that still remains. The research arises from the incorporation of modern materials in many traditional homes, which modifies their original construction systems. This also contributes to the progressive loss of these techniques and elements that are part of the parish's architectural identity. The methodology of this study was carried out using a qualitative and descriptive-analytical approach, based on the methodology of Hernández Sampieri. It was structured in three phases: delimitation of the study area and identification of existing traditional buildings; A constructive analysis of a selected dwelling was conducted, documented through a registration form created from direct observation and architectural surveys. A constructive synthesis of the dwelling was then developed, describing both its original and current state. The results demonstrate how the substitution of traditional materials for contemporary systems causes transformations in the materiality of the house, although elements that allow its vernacular origin to be recognized are still maintained; through constructive synthesis, a contribution is made to the documentation and valuation of the traditional architecture of the Andean region.
