Rediseño urbano-arquitectónico del Pasaje Marcial Soria del Cantón Patate

Abstract

The present degree project addresses the redesign of the Pasaje Marcial Soria, located in the canton of Patate, in the province of Tungurahua, in response to its limited articulation with the urban environment and the underutilization generated by the concentration of public facilities in its immediate surroundings. These conditions have produced a state of physical and perceptual abandonment, accompanied by a growing sense of insecurity and the need to strengthen accessible and high-quality public spaces for the community. The research is developed under a qualitative approach with a descriptive scope, through the preparation of cartographic analyses and semi-structured interviews with key local actors. These inputs made it possible to identify that the passage currently operates as a closed space, with limited functional and visual connection to its immediate environment and with restrictions in terms of universal accessibility— factors that reinforce its isolation within the cluster of concentrated facilities in the area. The design proposal reinterprets characteristic elements of Patate’s architectural typology and integrates relevant local references such as the San Cristóbal Church, the former municipal building, and the town’s heritage houses. It also incorporates the identification of endemic plant species selected for their climatic adaptation and contribution to local identity. The project organizes the public space into three plazas articulated around the passage, conceived as a structuring axis that links the plazas and the frontages of nearby facilities. The intervention aims to restore the spatial and functional integration of the passage with its immediate context, preserving the architectural language of the canton and promoting a more continuous, accessible, and inclusive public space.
