Abstract
This study examines the relationship between eating habits and Body Mass Index (BMI) in students of Nutrition and Telecommunications Engineering at the Technical University of Ambato, with the aim of identifying dietary patterns and assessing their impact on health. A descriptive and cross-sectional research design was used, involving a virtual questionnaire of 15 questions to classify eating habits into four categories, along with anthropometric measurements to calculate students’ BMI. The sample consistedof 64 students from both majors, selected by convenience, meeting specific inclusion and exclusion criteria. The results showed that approximately 31.25% of students have healthy eating habits, while 68.75% exhibit less healthy behaviors, with the Nutrition and Dietetics group demonstrating a higher proportion of adequate habits. However, in both groups, a significant prevalence of overweight was observed, with over 43% in Nutrition and Dietetics and nearly 36% in Telecommunicatio n s Engineering, indicatinga disconnect between theoretical knowledge and actual practice regarding healthy lifestyles. Associated factors include academic stress, sedentary behavior, and limitations of time and resources. The findings highlight the need to implement educational interventions that promote nutritious habits and physical activity within the university environment to reduce the risk of chronic diseases related to weight and to improve students’ overall quality of life.
