Abstract

Recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis (RVVC) is a chronic vaginal infection caused by the fungus Candida albicans and non-albicans pathogenic fungal species that affects healthy women at any stage of life. It is a debilitating pathological condition corresponding to the second most common vaginal infection, affecting 75-80% of women at least 1 time in their life and considers recurrent disease as the appearance of 3 to 4 episodes in 1 year. The purpose of this bibliographic review is to expose the consequences of recurrent disease on the global level of women's health in reproductive age. A systematic search of medical-scientific literature was carried out in the bibliographic bases of Scopus and PubMed, finding that the repercussions of the pathology can be seen influencing the global sphere of the patients' lives, and the organic pathophysiological alterations are varied, difficult to treat. and in many cases impossible to eradicate completely. The clinical picture compromises the quality of life of the affected women, in terms of satisfactory sexual activity, hygiene and genital health, physical integrity, psychological well-being and expenses for frequent medical care. Infection during pregnancy can lead to chorioamnionitis or candidemia in premature newborns. Approximately 138 million women suffer from recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis annually, and this number is expected to reach 158 million by 2030.
