Abstract
Description
The present research aimed to determine the influence of English audiobooks on the
development of bilingualism in 5- to 6-year-old children at the Bilingual Educational
Unit “CELITE.” The scientific foundation integrated contributions related to
children’s literature, didactic resources, audiobooks, oral communication, linguistic
development, and bilingualism, highlighting that auditory storytelling promotes
comprehension, verbal memory, phonological discrimination, and the natural
acquisition of vocabulary in a second language. The study was conducted under a
quantitative approach, with a non-experimental and correlational design. The
population consisted of 20 students who were administered a pretest and a posttest
based on the Listening section of the Cambridge Starters exam; additionally, teachers
were surveyed regarding their use of audiobooks as a didactic resource. The
intervention was carried out through planned sessions using English audiobooks
accompanied by visual material. The results showed a significant increase in posttest
scores (mean of 17.50 compared to 7.45 in the pretest), indicating a notable
improvement in English listening comprehension. The Wilcoxon test yielded a p-value
of 0.00009005 (< 0.05), confirming statistically significant differences and allowing
the acceptance of the proposed hypothesis. Likewise, the teacher survey indicated a
medium to high frequency in the use of audiobooks. It is concluded that audiobooks
constitute an effective and motivating resource for strengthening early bilingual skills,
justifying their integration into English teaching practices in early education.
