Abstract
This research focuses on the identity analysis of the Guaricha's attire within the
Diablada Pillareña, a cultural expression recognized as intangible cultural heritage of
Ecuador and considered one of the most representative festive expressions of the Píllaro
canton. The study is based on the premise that clothing transcends its aesthetic function to
become a symbolic system capable of communicating values, beliefs, identities, and cultural
meanings that strengthen collective memory and the community's sense of belonging.
From a theoretical perspective, the research addresses the relationship between the
cultural context of the Diablada Pillareña and the construction of collective identities,
analyzing how the Guaricha's attire reflects processes of tradition, cultural transformation,
and hybridization between inherited and contemporary elements. Likewise, the Guaricha is
examined as a festive character who, through her clothing, expresses symbolic
representations linked to femininity, transgression, satire, and social critique, revealing
tensions related to gender roles and current sociocultural dynamics.
The study considers the Guaricha's attire as the independent variable, addressing
aspects related to its components, main garments, accessories, materials, tailoring techniques,
formal elements, functions, and symbolic meanings. The dependent variable, in turn,
corresponds to the cultural significance, analyzed through symbolic and social dimensions
that allow for an understanding of the interpretation of signs, cultural values, symbolic
representation, cultural identity, sense of belonging, social interaction, and the role this
character plays within the festival.
The theoretical foundations are based on contributions from authors such as Geertz,
Hall, García Canclini, Barthes, Turner, Entwistle, and Bourdieu, who allow us to understand
clothing as a visual language and a dynamic cultural manifestation. From this perspective,
the research recognizes that the meanings associated with the Guaricha's attire are neither
static nor homogeneous, but rather are constantly being reinterpreted due to social, cultural,
heritage, and tourism-related factors. Finally, the research seeks to contribute to the understanding of the cultural and
identity value of the Guaricha's clothing, highlighting its importance as an element of
collective representation, cultural heritage, and a means of symbolic expression within the
Diablada Pillareña. It also aims to contribute to strengthening local historical memory and
generate academic knowledge that allows for a critical evaluation of the processes of
conservation, transformation, and transmission of this cultural manifestation in contemporary
society.
Description
La presente investigación se centra en el análisis identitario de la vestimenta de la
Guaricha dentro de la Diablada Pillareña, manifestación cultural reconocida como
patrimonio cultural inmaterial del Ecuador y considerada una de las expresiones festivas más
representativas del cantón Píllaro. El estudio parte de la premisa de que la vestimenta
trasciende su función estética para constituirse en un sistema simbólico capaz de comunicar
valores, creencias, identidades y significados culturales que fortalecen la memoria colectiva
y el sentido de pertenencia de la comunidad.
Desde una perspectiva teórica, la investigación aborda la relación entre el contexto
cultural de la Diablada Pillareña y la construcción de identidades colectivas, analizando cómo
la vestimenta de la Guaricha refleja procesos de tradición, transformación cultural e
hibridación entre elementos heredados y contemporáneos. Asimismo, se examina a la
Guaricha como personaje festivo que, mediante su indumentaria, expresa representaciones
simbólicas vinculadas a la feminidad, la transgresión, la sátira y la crítica social,
evidenciando tensiones relacionadas con los roles de género y las dinámicas socioculturales
actuales.
El estudio considera como variable independiente el análisis de la vestimenta de la
Guaricha, abordando aspectos relacionados con sus componentes, prendas principales,
accesorios, materiales, técnicas de confección, elementos formales, funciones y significados
simbólicos. A su vez, la variable dependiente corresponde al significado cultural, analizado
a través de dimensiones simbólicas y sociales que permiten comprender la interpretación de
signos, los valores culturales, la representación simbólica, la identidad cultural, el sentido de
pertenencia, la interacción social y el rol que desempeña este personaje dentro de la
festividad. Los fundamentos teóricos se sustentan en aportes de autores como Geertz, Hall,
García Canclini, Barthes, Turner, Entwistle y Bourdieu, quienes permiten comprender la
vestimenta como un lenguaje visual y una manifestación cultural dinámica. Desde esta
perspectiva, la investigación reconoce que los significados asociados a la indumentaria de la
Guaricha no son estáticos ni homogéneos, sino que se encuentran en constante resignificación
debido a factores sociales, culturales, patrimoniales y turísticos.
Finalmente, la investigación busca contribuir a la comprensión del valor cultural e
identitario de la vestimenta de la Guaricha, destacando su importancia como elemento de
representación colectiva, patrimonio cultural y medio de expresión simbólica dentro de la
Diablada Pillareña. Asimismo, pretende aportar al fortalecimiento de la memoria histórica
local y generar conocimiento académico que permita valorar críticamente los procesos de
conservación, transformación y transmisión de esta manifestación cultural en la sociedad
contemporánea.
