Abstract
Reinforced concrete is one of the most widely used structural elements in Ecuadorian
constructions. By the fourth quarter of 2022, 79.5 percent of the material present in the
structure was registered, that is, the predominant material in the country. Being so
widely used, the question arose how high temperatures affect simple concrete
compared to fiber-reinforced concrete.
The present work studied the influence of polypropylene fibers in plain concrete after
being affected at high temperatures. Obtaining a correct dosage was achieved by
analyzing the characteristics of the fine and coarse aggregates, then the required
resistance was verified by means of the compression test in cylindrical specimens for
resistances of 210 and 240 kg/square centimeters. Once the resistance was obtained,
beam-type test tubes of dimensions 10x10x35 centimeters were made where 2 dosages
were used with respect to the macrofiber with 0 and 3 kg/cubic meters. After curing
the specimens for 28 days, they were subjected to different temperatures: 20, 100, 280
and 600 degrees Celsius. Subsequently, the respective flexural tests (ASTM 1609)
were carried out, for the elaboration of the stress vs. deflection graph where the
behavior of the concrete without fibers and with fibers was compared.
The comparison of the resistances and the addition of fibers in the specimens allowed
us to verify the influence of these at high temperatures, improving their resistance to
flexion at all exposure temperatures.
