Abstract
Introduction: Diabetic neuropathy (DN) is a common complication of diabetes mellitus (DM) responsible for 70% of amputations. Lean body mass (LBM), which includes muscles, bones, organs and water, is crucial for the quality of life of these patients. Objective: To analyze the relationship between lean body composition, sociodemographic characteristics and type of treatment in patients with diabetic neuropathy. Methods: A descriptive, observational, crosssectional study was conducted with 82 patients aged 37-91 years with DN. Nonprobabilistic convenience sampling was used. The dependent variables were lean body composition (LBC), measured by bioimpedance, and the independent variables were sociodemographic characteristics and type of treatment. Pearson's correlation test and principal component analysis (PCA) were used. Results: Most participants were women aged 59-69 years (28.57%), with a high concentration in urban areas. The most common treatment was with tablets (57.69% men, 48.21% in women). Age showed an inverse correlation with lean body composition (LBC), especially with protein (-.457**) and muscle and cell mass (-.456**). Gender significantly influenced lean components. Correlations between LBC and treatments are low. Conclusions: Age and gender influence LBM, with loss of muscle, protein and bone mass with aging. A
balanced diet and exercise are recommended to preserve lean mass and reduce the impact of DN in the long term.
