Abstract

The present study aims to evaluate the hydraulic behavior of the stone aggregates extracted from the “Las Minas” quarry, in order to verify their suitability for use in drainage systems applied to civil engineering works. To this end, physical characterization tests were carried out, including grain size distribution, moisture content, Atterberg limits, and permeability, in accordance with technical standards such as ASTM and AASHTO. The results obtained allowed the materials to be classified, according to the Unified Soil Classification System (SUCS), as poorly graded sands (SP-SC) and well-graded sands with low plasticity (SW-SC), revealing a low percentage of fine soils—such as silt—and a moisture content that varied depending on soil type. Regarding hydraulic behavior, the permeability coefficients for the coarse aggregate were high, while the fine aggregates exhibited intermediate values, and the silt showed semi-permeable behavior. These findings demonstrate that the lack of proper grain size classification leads to inadequate hydraulic conditions for technical applications, increasing the risks of over-drainage and loss of stability. Additionally, different combinations of materials were evaluated in representative configurations, confirming that balanced mixtures reduce permeability to technically acceptable levels. It is essential to establish a continuous quarry quality control program, complemented by regular testing both in the laboratory and in the field, to ensure that the materials meet the technical requirements established by regulations and project specifications. Based on the results, it can be concluded that a correct implementation of each of the tests ensures the efficiency and safety of drainage systems in infrastructure projects.
