Abstract

The psyllid (Bactericera cockerelli Sulc.) is a pest that has affected tree tomato (Solanum betaceum L.) production in recent years. Faced with this situation, farmers have opted for the intensive use of chemical insecticides for its control, without considering the high costs involved. Therefore, the application of more ecological and sustainable management practices for controlling this pest is ideal. The objective of this research was to "Evaluate the resistance to B. cockerelli in tree tomato plants propagated in vitro." The trial was conducted at the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences of the Technical University of Ambato, where the effect of alternative management practices (ozonated oil, Axsil, and chemical treatment) applied weekly to in vitro and commercial tomato plants was evaluated. The experimental design was a split-plot design structured in a completely randomized block with five replications. The number of eggs and nymphs, as well as height and diameter, were measured during the first and sixth months, while nitrogen, Brix degrees, and leaf deformation were evaluated in the fifth and sixth months. The results indicated that the in vitro plant (A1) reduced egg development (average of 15.48) and nymph development (average of 1.36). Furthermore, the in vitro plant (A1F1) treated with ozonated oil showed higher Brix degrees in the leaf petiole (average of 4.78%), and 80% of the plants remained undamaged by leaf deformation. On the other hand, the commercial plant treated with ozonated oil (A2F1) stood out for its height at 112.42 cm and its diameter at 32.74 mm. Finally, the commercial plant with chemical treatment (A2F3) had the highest nitrogen content at 3.30 mg/g, compared to 2.68 mg/g in treatment A2F1
