Abstract
The need to leave the country of origin for an unknow destination in the hope of finding
new opportunities and a better quality of live for the person himself, as well as family
members, has triggered symptoms related to low self-esteem and anxiety in the adult
migrant population that, in a certain way, she is linked and influenced by the estrangement
from her loved ones, the desire to fit in and adapt to the socio-cultural environment where
she finds herself, the desire to find a stable and solvent job, among others. The objective
of the research was to analyze the relationship between self-esteem and anxiety in migrant
adults through a quantitative, descriptive-correlational study with a cross-sectional
approach with a sample of 110 people (35 men and 65 women) from Venezuela,
Colombia and Bolivia, to whom the psychometric instruments where applied: Rosenberg
Self-Esteem Scale and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory according to the study variables.
The analyzed results identified a prevalence of low self-esteem in 62% of population,
while the statistic in relation to anxiety showed 71% in trait- anxiety and 67% in state-
anxiety. Among the variables, the existence of a statistically significant correlation
between self-esteem and anxiety (p= ,000) was identified using the Spearman ́s Rho
parametric test, which was moderately negative in Self-Esteem and Trait- Anxiety (Rho=
-,544), when the same as Self-Esteem and State- Anxiety (Rho= -,495), showing a very
strong inverse relationship.
