Abstract
Description
The current account of the balance of payments represents one of the fundamental
indicators to evaluate the economic health of a country in the international context.
The main purpose of the study focuses on analyzing the Macroeconomic Determinants
that affect the Current Account of Ecuador's balance of payments in the period 2018-
2023, focusing specifically on the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the Inflation
Percentage (%I), the Real Exchange Rate (RER) and the Public External Debt (DEp).
It is oriented towards the understanding of how these variables affect the Current
Account Balance, fundamental for the formulation of economic policies. This degree
work has a deep documentary analysis, which reached 3 levels of descriptive,
correlational and explanatory research, based on secondary sources provided by the
Central Bank of Ecuador (BCE) and the National Institute of Statistics and Census
(INEC). The data collected were processed using matrices in statistical software such
as SPSS and R Studio, allowing a rigorous and detailed analysis of the causal
relationships between the variables mentioned. Among the main results, a significant
correlation measured by Spearman's Rho analysis has been identified. Where the Real
Exchange Rate (RER) and the Public External Debt (DEp) show a significant influence
on the Current Account Balance. Also, a quantile regression model was run to explain
the dynamic relationship. It is concluded that it is evident that there is both a positive
and negative impact on the current account balance with both determinants, which
underlines the importance of considering these factors when designing economic
strategies and international policies. Consequently, government decisions are
intrinsically linked to these macroeconomic determinants to ensure Ecuador's
economic stability and sustainability.
