This integrative project aims to design a modular gerontological residential system in the parish of Santa Rosa, Ambato canton, focused on providing care and accommodation for older adults living in conditions of poverty, abandonment, and social vulnerability. The research responds to the growing challenges generated by population aging and the lack of specialized infrastructure capable of ensuring adequate living conditions, health care, safety, and social inclusion for this priority population group. The study identifies significant social and housing deficiencies affecting older adults in Santa Rosa, including poverty, inadequate housing conditions, limited family support networks, and restricted access to specialized services. Furthermore, the existing facilities intended for elderly care do not meet the technical standards required for comprehensive gerontological assistance, resulting in barriers related to accessibility, comfort, health care, social interaction, and residential support. The methodological approach combined documentary research, regulatory analysis, interviews with professionals involved in elderly care, architectural case studies, and territorial assessment of the selected site. These methods enabled the establishment of design guidelines based on the physical, emotional, and social needs of older adults, while considering the environmental and urban characteristics of the context. The proposed architectural solution is based on principles of modular architecture, universal accessibility, environmental comfort, flexibility, and integration with nature. The project includes residential, administrative, complementary care, and service modules organized through a functional system that promotes autonomy, social interaction, and active aging. Green areas, therapeutic spaces, and community environments are incorporated to enhance physical health, emotional well-being, and social participation.

This study analyzes the co-design methods used with older adults in the Picaihua Parish, with the aim of understanding their contribution to the creative process and their productive participation in the artisanal design of accessories woven with Murano beads. The study begins by identifying three problems: the gradual disappearance of ancestral craft skills, the deterioration of fine motor skills in older adults, and unemployment affecting this vulnerable group. Methodologically, the research was conducted through a co-design perspective, grounded in co-creation. Semi-structured interviews, observation sheets, and group workshops were used, conducted with the elderly members of the Picaihua Association at the parish GAD facilities. This procedure enabled the documentation of Murano bead weaving techniques as an important craft within the community. The results demonstrated that the co-creation method promotes the active participation of older adults in community spaces, enhancing their creative and productive abilities through the creation of accessories. This confirms that co-design is a useful methodological tool for highlighting the artisanal wisdom of older adults, preserving techniques, and creating opportunities for active participation that benefit both their well-being and the neighborhood’s cultural memory. It is concluded that codesign is an effective methodological tool for bringing the artisanal knowledge of older adults to the forefront, safeguarding techniques that are in danger of extinction, and creating opportunities for active participation that benefits both the cultural memory of the parish and the well-being of older adults.

This project focuses on the design of a playful object to stimulate fine motor skills in older adults, aiming to help maintain their motor and cognitive abilities through dynamic, functional activities adapted to their needs. The initiative arose in response to the decline in manual coordination and loss of motor precision identified in older adults residing at the Sagrado Corazón de Jesús nursing home in the city of Ambato, a situation that affects their autonomy and performance in daily activities A methodological research process was developed using Design Thinking, which included a literature review, direct observation, and interviews with professionals to determine the physical, cognitive, and emotional needs of the elderly population. To address these needs, accessible, ergonomic, and aesthetically pleasing therapeutic tools must be developed to motivate and engage users. The solution proposed in the research is the design of the play object "Ludde," created to promote fine motor skills and reinforce cognitive abilities through recognition, classification, and manipulation of modular pieces. The product allows users to practice pincer grasp, cylindrical grip, and hand-eye coordination. In creating the design, ergonomics, functionality, and aesthetics we considered, adapting the physical and cognitive capabilities to ensure user interaction. In this sense, the project demonstrates how industrial design can offer solutions focused on holistic well-being, providing tools that strengthen autonomy, motor skills, and cognitive development through playful experiences adapted to the realities of older adults.

Garcia Moreno parish, Pelileo canton, Tungurahua province, records 749 elderly people aged 65 and over 9.23% of its total population facing multidimensional vulnerability: 45.3% live in poverty, most live alone as a consequence of youth migration, and the parish lacks any specialized facility for the care of this group. This situation generates severe social isolation, accelerated physical deterioration and absence of specialized health services within a radius of less than 12 kilometers. For this reason, the research is justified by providing an architectural response to a documented and unmet social need. The absence of specialized infrastructure in García Moreno makes the Community Care Center the first facility of its kind in the Pelileo canton, with its headquarters in the García Moreno parish. The project contributes to the territorial planning of the PDOT (2023), to the objectives of the MIES (2024) for comprehensive elderly care, and to the rights agenda of the Constitution of the Republic of Ecuador. The research adopts a qualitative phenomenological approach. Semi-structured interviews were applied to elderly adults (n=5), the parish GAD representative (n=1), health professionals (n=2) and specialist architects (n=2), complemented by fifteen direct observation sheets in community activities. Information was processed in Atlas.ti 26, identifying six emerging categories. A comparative territorial analysis of ten candidate plots determined plot T8 in Chumaqui as the optimal location for the project implementation. The preliminary design proposes a 2,220 m² Community Reception Center, with capacity for 37 residential places and 30–40 day users, organized on three levels that take advantage of the site's topography. The organizing concept is the U-shaped, biophilic central courtyard, which acts as a passive thermal regulator, a source of natural light, and a space for social interaction. The project integrates universal accessibility, therapeutic architecture, and passive bioclimatic design principles, responding to the needs documented in the fieldwork.

This research develops the application of vernacular architecture in the design of a preliminary housing complex for older adults in the parish of Pilahuín, Tungurahua. The study addresses the problem of population aging, youth migration and the lack of permanent, accessible and safe residential models for this age group. It also recognizes the progressive loss of local vernacular architecture and the need to recover its constructive, spatial and climatic principles as a response to the rural Andean context. The main objective was to design a housing proposal that integrates universal accessibility, geronto-architecture, Senior Cohousing and vernacular architecture criteria, in order to strengthen autonomy, safety, thermal comfort and the sense of belonging of older adults. The methodology followed a qualitative approach, with a documentary-bibliographic and field-based modality, through theoretical and regulatory review, interviews, site observation, photographic records and analysis of the vernacular characteristics of Pilahuín. As a result, design guidelines were established based on short routes, transition spaces, community areas, courtyards, portals, sloped roofs, eaves, raised foundations and the reinterpretation of local materials. The proposal is organized through compact housing modules, a communal house and an administrative and comprehensive care area, articulating private, collective and support spaces. It is concluded that the preliminary project responds to a real social and architectural need by proposing a dignified, accessible and community-oriented housing model that is coherent with Andean cultural memory.

The project addresses the design of an urban garden adapted to the context of institutionalized older adults, aiming to promote their emotional, cognitive, and social well-being through contact with nature. The research stems from the increasing population of older adults, which has a growing demand for spaces and elements that promote healthy aging. In the context of geriatric institutions, interaction with natural elements is limited due to the lack of accessible green spaces, which diminishes their quality of life and produces feelings of disconnection and isolation. Using the Design Thinking methodology, an environmental and user study was conducted, identifying the need to implement a green solution as a response to the user's physical and cognitive limitations within their immediate environment. The research employed a mixed-methods approach, including document review, environmental analysis through non-participant observation, interviews, and surveys. This approach was necessary to establish a diagnosis based on the concepts of accessibility, functionality, ease of use, and stimulation, which allowed for the development of a functional prototype with an irrigation system and other functional mechanisms. The implementation of the prototype boosted interest in outdoor activities and interaction with other residents and was consolidated as a viable and replicable element in relation to its line of research, which allowed the garden to be considered as a functional complement to the environment of the elderly and responds to the challenges of the current aging of the population.

This research develops and validates a modular ceiling-mounted hoist designed to improve assisted mobility for older adults in home environments within the province of Tungurahua. The continuous growth of the geriatric population, combined with architectural limitations and the high physical strain experienced by caregivers during manual transfers, highlights the urgent need for accessible, safe, and adaptable solutions suited to the local context. The study adopts a mixed-methods approach, integrating interviews with professionals, surveys, and direct observation in a geriatric care facility, complemented by technical analyses and digital simulations. Findings indicate that older adults face significant mobility challenges and that caregivers frequently perform high-effort maneuvers, increasing the risk of injuries and reducing transfer efficiency. Triangulated data confirms the relevance of an assisted mechanism that minimizes physical load, enhances postural safety, and strengthens user autonomy. A technical comparison of gear systems, motor-reducers, and pulley configurations led to the selection of a block-and-tackle mechanism due to its simplicity, mechanical efficiency, low cost, and compatibility with residential structures—particularly concrete ceilings, which are common in the region. The final design was modeled using CAD software and subjected to structural simulations with a 686.7 N load, verifying appropriate safety factors and stable stress distribution. The study concludes with a functional digital model adaptable to different domestic settings and technically viable for future physical prototyping. The proposal contributes a concrete solution to promote independence, safety, and well-being among older adults in home-based care environments.

The present study focuses on addressing the lack of adapted materials for cognitive stimulation in older adults at the Señor de los Remedios senior care center, where current therapies are implemented using limited and generalized tangible resources. To bridge this gap, the study proposes: evaluating existing intervention materials, identifying current cognitive activities and needs among residents, and developing a graphic toolkit with recreational, leisure, and cognitive reinforcement activities based on cognitive stimulation interventions. Through a deductive method and mixed-methodology approach, technical criteria from psychology, geriatric care, and graphic design were analyzed. This included an assessment of visual materials to create a three-component proposal encompassing art therapy, play therapy, motor skills training, group activities, and reminiscence therapy. In conclusion, the designed graphic materials aim to serve as a playful support tool for recreational and stimulatory purposes, without replacing medical or psychological interventions.

This research focuses on the design and development of therapeutic materials aimed at preventing the deterioration of fine motor skills in institutionalized older adults, specifically at the Hogar de Ancianos Corazón de Jesús in Ambato, Ecuador. Fine motor skills are essential for daily activities such as writing, buttoning clothes, or handling small objects—abilities that commonly decline with age, significantly impacting autonomy and quality of life. To develop therapeutic materials that address this issue, a mixed-methods approach was applied. Quantitative tools like the Minnesota Manual Dexterity Test were combined with qualitative methods such as interviews with healthcare professionals and elderly residents to assess functional needs and validate the effectiveness of the proposal. The outcome was LiForm, a multifunctional therapeutic device designed to enhance hand-eye coordination, wrist and finger mobility, and cognitive stimulation. The product is ergonomic, modular, and play-oriented, created using the Design Thinking methodology. The design incorporates textured surfaces, interchangeable components, and flexible materials adapted to users’ physical limitations. Moreover, the project promotes an inclusive, sustainable, and culturally contextualized approach, making it replicable in other geriatric institutions. LiForm demonstrates that industrial design can provide effective and accessible therapeutic solutions, supporting active and dignified aging through user-centered, emotionally engaging, and functional products.

The Comprehensive Senior Center in Ambato is much more than a physical space; it is a place designed to promote the well-being, autonomy, and dignity of a vulnerable and growing population. This center seeks to offer a safe, accessible, and comfortable environment that responds to the multiple physical, social, and emotional needs of older adults. The center's renovation is proposed as a comprehensive architectural intervention that not only improves the current infrastructure but also promotes inclusion and quality of life for its users. To develop this proposal, a comprehensive analysis was conducted, including architectural surveys, interviews with users and staff, and a regulatory study that ensured compliance with national laws and international best practices. The residents' physical limitations, such as reduced mobility and risk of falls, were assessed, as was the importance of spaces that promote social interaction, cognitive stimulation, and recreation. This allowed for the definition of design criteria based on universal accessibility, environmental comfort, the use of warm materials, and the incorporation of biophilic elements. The project proposes the creation of flexible and multifunctional spaces, including green areas, therapeutic gardens, and socializing areas with ergonomic furniture, which facilitate integration and active aging. Furthermore, structural safety was prioritized through the rehabilitation of critical areas and the improvement of access and pathways. The architectural proposal seeks to transform the Comprehensive Center into a benchmark for comprehensive care for older adults in Ambato, promoting their physical, emotional, and social well-being in a dignified and stimulating environment.
