    The Ecuadorian territory undergoes great changes that alter the structures of the cities, the lack of balanced and homogeneous development on the land makes administration and the establishment of laws difficult, for this reason it is necessary to carry out multi temporal studies to know growth trends. This is how the city of Ambato is selected as the study area, being the capital and part of the driving force of the province of Tungurahua, it is important to know its expansion in order to predict and make better decisions in its territorial administration. The objective of this work was to analyze urban growth and changes in land use through the interpretation of satellite images taken from LandSat 7 satellites between the years 2004-2021, where it was concluded that the city has had an expansion directed at the peripheral areas of the cantonal head covering the areas that correspond to the limits of the city, in the same way the urban area within a period of 17 years of 2318.93 ha that it had in 2004 has come to have 7149.24 ha by 2021, increasing the construction area of the city and in turn causing a conversion at the expense of the rural lands that surround the city, so the null hypothesis is accepted, which indicates that the process of urban expansion has caused a change in land use of rural areas in the city of Ambato between the years 2004-2021. On the other hand, in reference to the definition of optimal sites for urban growth, variables such as threats due to mass movements, slope and dangerous events were established, which helped to establish the areas located in the southwest as areas for urban growth. and northeast of the city.
