The population consisted of 150 third-year high school students from Unidad Educativa Juan León Mera La Salle, located in Ambato, Ecuador. The research followed a quantitative, correlational approach using a Likert-scale questionnaire as the main data collection instrument. The questionnaire was designed according to the indicators of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and the theoretical functions of code-switching, including equivalence, reiteration, floor-holding and conflict control. Moreover, five experts on the subject validated and approved the questionnaire, showing an acceptance rate of each question ranging from 0.92 to 1 in the Aiken V coefficient, confirming its validity. Then, the researcher administered the survey and the results analyzed through the SPSS program showed a moderate positive correlation with a value of r = 0.590 between code-switching and oral production, with a statistically significant level of p < 0.001. This suggests that students who frequently apply code-switching functions tend to demonstrate better oral performance in the classroom. In conclusion, code-switching contributes positively to oral communication and represents a useful resource in the teaching and learning process of English.
