Identificación de ectoparásitos en la tilapia roja (Oreochromis mossambicus) y negra (Oreochromis niloticus) en piscifactorías del Cantón Carlos Julio Arosemena Tola
(2025-02) Herrera Zapata Damary Abigail; Guerrero López Jorge Ricardo
The present study aimed to investigate the identification of ectoparasites in red tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus) and black tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) populations in the canton of Carlos Julio Arosemena Tola in Ecuador. For this purpose, an exhaustive investigation was carried out in 31 fish farms, focusing on 11 farms that reported having health problems. A total of 55 specimens were selected (37 O. niloticus and 18. mossambicus). To carry out the parasitological analysis, microscopic techniques of skin, fins, gills, nares and eyeballs were used in the field study to identify ectoparasites. In addition, factors influencing parasite prevalence were assessed, including fish stocking density and geographical distribution within the canton. Microscopic analysis revealed the presence of Cichlidogyrus sclerosus, a monogenic ectoparasite and mainly located in the first two gill arches in both O. mossambicus and O. niloticus populations. The prevalence of this parasite was higher in O. niloticus (48.64%) compared to O. mossambicus (27.77%). Similarly for the intensity variable, O. niloticus reflected a slightly higher intensity (8.5) than O. mossambicus (7.0). Finally, management strategies for sustainable tilapia farming practices are proposed to mitigate the impact of ectoparasites on fish health and productivity.
