Item Transformational Learning and the Speaking Skill(Universidad Técnica de Ambato-Facultad de Ciencias Humanas y de la Educación-Carrera de Pedagogía de los Idiomas Nacionales y extranjeros, 2024-07-01) Torres Cordova, Esthela Elizabeth; Infante Paredes, Ruth ElizabethThe present research aimed to assess the effectiveness of transformative learning on students' speaking skills. The researcher employed a pre-experimental design, specifically a single-group pretest-posttest design, utilizing a quantitative approach for statistical analysis of the collected data. Both bibliographic and field research modalities were employed: bibliographic research provided a foundation of reliable information for designing the research instruments, while field research facilitated interventions at the designated location. The study was conducted at the Universidad Técnica de Ambato, involving 32 second-semester PINE major students. Data collection instruments included a survey to gather participants' perceptions and experiences related to environmental topics, a standardized Cambridge test (KET) administered at the beginning and end of the interventions, and a standardized rubric with categories for grammar and vocabulary, pronunciation, and interactive communication to evaluate oral skills. The results indicated that transformative learning, based on Jack Mezirow's theory, significantly improved students' speaking skills. The methods employed were effective not only in enhancing communicative competencies but also in fostering critical thinking and the ability to formulate independent perspectives. In addition, the transformative learning approach significantly enhanced students' ability to engage in conversations without relying on prompts, enabling them to express their ideas more freely and confidently which help to have a more spontaneous and authentic communication.
