    Corrective Feedback and Writing Skills
(Universidad Técnica de Ambato-Facultad de Ciencias Humanas y de la Educación-Carrera de Pedagogía de los Idiomas Nacionales y extranjeros, 2024-07-01) García Cabrera, Maria Elisa; Parra Gavilánez, Lorena Fernanda
This research aims to analyze the effects of corrective feedback on writing skills in English as a foreign language. Through a pre-experimental design with a quantitative methodology. The focus of the research was a group of 33 fifth-semester students majoring in Pedagogía de los Idiomas Nacionales y Extranjeros at Universidad Técnica de Ambato, which were divided into two groups to analyze which type of Corrective Feedback was more favorable. One group of 16 students received direct feedback, while the other group of 17 students received metalinguistic feedback. In addition, to evaluate the results, the Cambridge First Certificate in English (FCE) was used, focusing specifically on the writing section, only part 1 which corresponds to an essay, and part 2 to a report. With a quantitative approach, the study employed data collection using (SPSS) and the Wilcoxon test was used for hypothesis testing. The findings indicate that both corrective feedback strategies are useful for pointing out errors and areas for improvement in written texts. However, direct feedback proved to be the most effective strategy, with students showing a marked improvement in the quality of their written texts compared to those who received metalinguistic feedback. These results underscore the importance of implementing corrective feedback in the teaching of writing, as it offers the opportunity to reflect on and progressively improve their performance. In addition, during the interventions, the students demonstrated a notable increase in their enthusiasm and interest in learning the language.
