(Universidad Técnica de Ambato/ Facultad de Ciencias de Salud /Carrera de Psicología Clínica, 2023-09-18) Chasiquiza González, Arelis de los Ángeles; Gavilanes Gómez, Guillermo Daniel
As body image is an abstract and conscious representation of the body, it is often influenced by psychological, historical, individual, biological and social factors, leading people to compare themselves with figures they consider ideal, often leading to eating disorders (ED). The objective of the research was to determine the relationship between body image dissatisfaction and coping strategies in university students, where the population analyzed was 247 women, obtaining a sample of 206 medical students 34.5% and nursing students 65.5%, in a range of 18 to 28 years of age. The study had a quantitative - non-experimental approach with cross-sectional and correlational scope. The Body Image Dissatisfaction Questionnaire adapted by Hueda in 2016 in Peru, and the Coping Strategies Inventory for Women (CSI-R) were used. Regarding the correlation between body image and coping strategies it was determined that 64%, manage self-criticism, and 53% wish to apply desiderative thoughts, while 71.8% reflected minimal dissatisfaction with their body, and within the strategies the one that prevailed is cognitive restructuring with 11.7%. In conclusion, the aspects most related between body image and dissatisfaction are self-criticism and social support, so strategies such as: seeking social support groups, increasing self-confidence, empathy and self-motivation are recommended.
