Abstract

This research project analyzes the relationship between motorcycle tourism and tourist routes in the Píllaro canton, considering this activity as an emerging alternative to diversify and strengthen the local tourism offerings. The study was based on Sensation Seeking Theory, which explains the exploratory and adventurous behavior of motorcycle tourists. The methodological approach was mixed, combining qualitative and quantitative techniques. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with local stakeholders, field notes were kept on two representative routes, and surveys were administered to 139 motorcycle tourists and residents of the canton, allowing for a broad and contextualized understanding of the phenomenon. The results showed that Píllaro has high potential for the development of motorcycle tourism thanks to its diverse landscapes, cultural richness, and the presence of natural and heritage attractions. However, significant weaknesses were identified related to a lack of tourist signage, a scarcity of specialized services, the absence of environmental management points, and limited community participation in tourism activities. Those surveyed and interviewed expressed a favorable perception of motorcycle tourism, highlighting its capacity to boost the local economy, promote cultural exchange, and position the canton as an adventure destination. In conclusion, it was determined that motorcycle tourism can be consolidated as a key component within the tourism development of Píllaro, provided that improvements are implemented in infrastructure, environmental management, and the formalization of routes. As a final contribution, the design of a motorcycle tourism route is proposed, integrating attractions, services, and cultural elements of the region, promoting a sustainable and competitive model.
