Abstract
This research project addresses a highly relevant and contemporary issue: the need to
improve urban accessibility through the use of sustainable materials, considering that
cities such as Baños de Agua Santa lack tactile paving systems essential for the safe
mobility of visually impaired individuals. This challenge is intensified by the local humid
climate, which demands resistant and durable materials with adequate performance under
moisture exposure. At the same time, the province of Tungurahua generates significant
quantities of industrial metallic waste that is not properly utilized, presenting an
opportunity to strengthen circular economy practices and reduce environmental impact.
The study was conducted using a quantitative approach with an experimental design. The
applied methodology included the collection and sieving of metallic shavings, their
incorporation in different dosages within a cementitious matrix, and the fabrication of
tactile concrete pavers subjected to compressive strength and indirect tensile tests. The
research line corresponds to Design, Materials, and Production. The results indicate that it
is feasible to develop an eco-efficient composite material using industrial metallic waste
in specific proportions, achieving improved mechanical performance and reducing
environmental footprint. The final proposal consists of a sustainable and functional tactile
paving element suitable for the climatic conditions of Baños, contributing both to
universal accessibility and to responsible management of industrial waste. This represents
an innovative and replicable solution for similar urban contexts.
Description
contextos urbanos similares.
