Abstract

Description

The present study analizes the relationship between reeding speed and text comprehension in fifth and sixth grade students from the Glenn Doman Educational Unit. The research problem is focused on determining whether reading speed rate significantly affects comprehension performance. The main objective was to evaluate this relationship and identify performance profile to support psycopedagogical decision-making. The PROLEC-R battery and the Reading Comprehension Test (CLP) were applied and the results were analyzed using descriptive statistics, specifically Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient and cut-off points system that classifies students into four performance levels. Findings revealed a moderate-to strong negative correlation between variables (r = -0.68), showing that longer reading times are associated with lower comprehension levels. There were significant differences observed between class groups: Fifth grade “B” presented the highest proportion of students with difficulties. Fifth Grade “A” presented scores closer to the expected average, while Sixth grade showed more consistent results in line with their age. It is concluded that reading speed significantly influences text comprehension and that the use of the cut-off based analytical systems helps a precise identification of needs and evidence-based psycopedagogical planning.
