Abstract
Description
International trade is essential for countries to develop, within international trade the
key elements are exports, imports, real exchange rate and the country's gross domestic
product. For this reason, the present study is carried out that diagnoses the qualitative
and quantitative historical behavior of the mentioned variables through statistical
tools; The Marshall-Lerner condition for the economy is verified through tests and
contrasts typical of econometrics. Finally, the relationship between GDP and exports
and imports is evaluated through the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) model and the
Vector Autoregressive (VAR) model. The results indicate that the variables have a
growing trend over time, the Marshall-Lerner condition is fulfilled for the Ecuadorian
economy and that a VAR model is the appropriate one to explain GDP with exports
and imports. It is concluded that the economic theory is contrasted with the historical
facts of Ecuador that originated the fluctuations in the variables, when the rate used in
Ecuador is devalued, there is a positive change in the country's imports and exports.
While to explain the GDP model in relation to exports and imports a VAR model is
necessary.
