Abstract
This project focuses on the design of stage costumes for contemporary dance, aimed
at the Jatun Takiri cast from Ambato, Ecuador. The research phase starts from the
global importance of contemporary dance and the growth of the costume market, but
identifies shortcomings in the functionality and adaptability of the garments, especially
in Latin American contexts where the specialized offer is limited. In the case of Jatun
Takiri, the absence of costumes designed specifically for their needs has restricted both
the artistic expression and the technical capacity of the cast, due to the lack of
specialized designers and adequate materials in the country.
The methodology used was qualitative and descriptive, using purposive sampling
with 15 dancers and the director of the cast. Focus groups, interviews and direct
observation of the choreography “Ancestros” were used to identify the technical,
aesthetic and symbolic requirements of the costumes. The results show that the
costumes must guarantee freedom of movement, resistance, visual coherence and
conceptual integration with the work
The proposal consists of the design of scenic clothing for “Ancestros”, integrating
elastic, light and breathable materials, and textile interventions such as sublimation,
macramé and gradients. The silhouettes and cuts prioritize mobility and aesthetics,
inspired by the Inca cosmovision of the Apus and ethnic elements of Jatun Takiri. The
project demonstrates that a well-designed stage costume is essential to strengthen
cultural identity and artistic expressiveness in contemporary dance.
