Abstract

The present research work; The main objective of this study is to analyze the impact of COVID-19 on patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) through a literature review to establish strategies to control the disease. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) represents a public health problem, approximately 62 million people in the Americas suffer from it, it is a chronic disease associated with insulin resistance (IR) in the pancreas, causing an increase in morbidity and mortality in patients diagnosed with the disease. But the relationship between DM and COVID-19 appears to be bidirectional, further complicating its understanding. More and more cases of patients with diabetic onset coinciding with the viral infection and not associated with treatment in the acute phase are being described. The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic affected the whole world, leaving high mortality rates, especially in diabetic patients infected with the severe acute respiratory syndrome virus (SARS-CoV-2) with high rates of hospitalization in intensive care (ICU) unlike patients who did not have the disease. The studies carried out describe that patient with type II diabetes mellitus have a greater development of the disease with serious complications affecting acute breathing, increasing the risk of severity by 2.3 times and the risk of mortality associated with COVID-19 by 2.5 times.
