Rediseño arquitectónico del Centro de Desarrollo Infantil ‘Las fresitas’ en el Mercado Central del cantón Ambato

Abstract

This research project presents the architectural redesign of the Child Development Center (CDI) “Las Fresitas,” located within the Central Market of Ambato, with the objective of optimizing its functional performance, spatial organization, and environmental conditions to strengthen early childhood infrastructure. The proposal is situated in a dense commercial environment where multiple activities converge, including the sale of food products, continuous pedestrian and vehicular circulation, and the educational and childcare functions provided by the CDI. The initial diagnosis demonstrated that the existing infrastructure does not adequately respond to the operational and pedagogical needs of the center. Furthermore, the shortage of appropriate spaces and the excessive intensity of use generate suboptimal environments that limit both learning and the provision of care. The project incorporates redesign criteria derived from interviews with experts and CDI personnel, as well as regulatory and technical analyses. This made it possible to identify fundamental architectural principles alongside the actual needs and requirements of the users. The proposal includes the strategic relocation of specific areas within the market, considering its comprehensive spatial dynamics. This holistic approach ensures an intervention that effectively articulates commercial activity with educational and childcare functions. Consequently, the resulting proposal not only adheres to functional and spatial guidelines but also integrates architectural strategies aimed at enhancing the educational experience, improving safety conditions, and optimizing the internal organization of the CDI. The combination of these elements led to a coherent and contextually grounded design, sensitive to the vulnerability of early childhood and adaptable to the dynamic conditions of the Central Market, thereby ensuring a more comprehensive, relevant, and purpose-aligned architectural solution.
