Expansión del turismo y crecimiento económico en Ecuador: Un análisis de causalidad

Abstract
La presente investigación analizó la relación entre la expansión turística y el
crecimiento económico del Ecuador, durante el periodo 2010-2020. Para lo cual se
apoyó en un enfoque cuantitativo, enfatizando mediciones objetivas y estadísticas.
Con información anual se realizó un diagnóstico descriptivo de las principales
variables del estudio, como: Producto Interno Bruto (PIB), VAB de las industrias y el
turismo receptivo. Por otro lado, con datos trimestrales y análisis econométrico, como
la prueba de cointegración de Johansen, un Modelo de Corrección de Errores de
Vectoriales (VECM) y el test de causalidad de Granger se analizó el vínculo estadístico
entre las variables. Además, se incluyó una variable binaria que recogió los impactos
negativos ocasionados por la pandemia del Covid-19. Los resultados sostienen que la
economía ecuatoriana ha presentado contantes variaciones influenciada por
condiciones internas como inestabilidades políticas, financieras y naturales, y
condiciones externas como los precios del petróleo, la apreciación del dólar y, sobre
todo, la crisis sanitaria que golpeo a la economía y comprimió los ingresos del país.
Los ingresos por concepto de turismo han mantenido una evolución favorable
aportando eficientemente a la economía nacional, sin embargo, su evolución también
ha sido frenada por la crisis sanitaria. Por último, el análisis econométrico determinó
el crecimiento de la economía es impulsado por la expansión turismo. Asimismo, se
constata el impacto negativo generado por la pandemia durante el 2020.
Description
This research analyzed the relationship between tourism expansion and economic
growth in Ecuador, during the 2010-2020 period. For which he relied on a quantitative
approach, emphasizing objective and statistical measurements. With annual
information, a descriptive diagnosis was made of the main variables of the study, such
as: Gross Domestic Product (GDP), GVA of industries and receptive tourism. On the
other hand, with quarterly data and econometric analysis, such as the Johansen
cointegration test, a Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) and the Granger causality
test, the statistical link between the variables was analyzed. In addition, a binary
variable was included that collected the negative impacts caused by the Covid-19
pandemic. The results maintain that the Ecuadorian economy has presented constant
variations influenced by internal conditions such as political, financial and natural
instabilities, and external conditions such as oil prices, the appreciation of the dollar
and above all, the health crisis that hit the economy and compressed the country's
income. Income from tourism has maintained a favorable evolution, contributing
efficiently to the national economy, however, its evolution has also been slowed down
by the health crisis. Finally, the econometric analysis determined the growth of the
economy is driven by tourism expansion. Likewise, the negative impact generated by
the pandemic during 2020 is verified.
