Abstract
This degree thesis consists of the architectural redesign of what is currently known as
the Ambato Exhibition Center (formerly known as PROA), due to the detected
functional obsolescence of the infrastructure located at the study site. This property
belongs to the Chamber of Industries and Production of Tungurahua (CIPT), a non-profit
trade association dedicated to supporting and promoting businesses and activities within
the productive sector that meet society's needs, with the ultimate goal of strengthening
and developing the industrial sector in Tungurahua and Zone 3 of Central Ecuador.
For this reason, this project focuses on the need to provide the city with a competitive,
multifunctional exhibition facility. The existing building does not meet current demands
for large-scale events or the spatial flexibility it should offer, additionally lacking key
comfort parameters such as thermal, acoustic, and lighting performance.
Through a qualitative approach at a descriptive-propositive level, on-site observation
and diagnostic techniques were used along with architectural survey sheets and semistructured interviews with key stakeholders, including authorities, organizers, exhibitors,
and visitors. The results of these applied techniques confirmed physical and functional
deterioration in the main pavilions, rendering them incapable of hosting fair events
efficiently.
The proposal establishes a new architectural complex designed based on concepts such
as "Bigness" and "Open Building" to achieve flexible functionality within the spaces
along with internal autonomy. This results in a polyfunctional center capable of
accommodating MICE industry activities, thereby guaranteeing the long-term operation
of the building.
Description
El presente trabajo de titulación consiste en el rediseño del actualmente conocido Centro de
Exposiciones Ambato (antes conocido como PROA), debido a la detección de caída en desuso
de las infraestructuras ubicadas en el sitio de estudio, perteneciente a la Cámara de Industrias y
Producción de Tungurahua, la cual es una entidad gremial no lucrativa con el propósito de
ayudar a sobresalir y promover a negocios o actividades del sector productivo que satisfagan
las necesidades de la sociedad, con la finalidad de fortificar y desarrollar el sector industrial de
Tungurahua y Zona 3 Centro del Ecuador.
Es por esta razón que el presente trabajo de proyecto se ha enfocado en la necesidad de brindar
a la ciudad un equipamiento de exhibición multifuncional competitivo, ya que la edificación
existente no se ajusta con las exigencias actuales requeridas para los eventos de gran magnitud
y la flexibilidad que debería abordar, además de parámetros de confort faltantes como la
sensación térmica, acústica e iluminación.
A través de un enfoque cualitativo de nivel descriptivo propositivo, se emplearon técnicas de
observación y diagnóstico in situ conjunto con fichas de levantamiento arquitectónico y
entrevistas semiestructuradas a actores clave, como autoridades, organizadores, expositores y
visitantes. Los resultados de las técnicas aplicadas confirmaron un deterioro físico y funcional
en los pabellones principales, incapaz de albergar eventos feriales de manera eficiente.
La propuesta establece un nuevo complejo arquitectónico diseñado en base a conceptos como
la “Bigness” y el “Open Building”, para poder establecer una funcionalidad flexible en los
espacios y con autonomía interna, llegando a tener como resultado un centro polifuncional
capaz de comprender actividades del ámbito MICE, garantizando la operación del edificio a
largo plazo.
