Abstract
Description
The objective of this research is to assess the financial survival of credit unions in Segment 1 of Ecuador during the 2016-2024 period, with the hypothesis that financial soliditysignificantly influences their ability to remain in the system. A quantitative, nonexperimental, and longitudinal approach was adopted, analyzing financial data from 44 credit unions registered with the Superintendency of Popular and Solidarity Economy (SEPS), using the CAMEL model to assess key performance indicators. In the first phase of the study, the financial solidity of the cooperatives was analyzed, observing a trend of progressive deterioration starting in 2019, accentuated by the health crisis in 2020. This deterioration was reflected in increased delinquency, reduced productive assets, decreased profitability, and weak equity. In the second phase, Spearman's correlation coefficient was used to identify significant relationships between key variables such as delinquency, capital adequacy, profitability (ROE), and administrative efficiency, and their influence on financial risk. Finally, the Cox regression model was applied to estimate the financial survival probability of the cooperatives, finding that delinquency and ROE are the main predictive factors for the risk of dissolution. The results confirmed the proposed hypothesis, showing that a strong financial structure is decisive for the survival of credit unions. As a result, it is concluded that it is crucial to strengthen risk management, optimize operational efficiency, and apply differentiated supervision mechanisms to prevent financial deterioration processes in the sector. This study provides valuable empirical evidence that can guide strategic decision-making in cooperatives, contributing to the stability and sustainability of the popular and solidarity financial system in Ecuador.
