    Uso del polvillo residual de cuero para la obtención de un material compuesto

    Curtiduría Tungurahua, a well-established leather processing company known for its quality and experience in the industry, has committed to mitigating the environmental impact associated with its operations. In response, this research was carried out in collaboration with the company, aiming to develop composite material by reusing the fine residual dust generated during the leather sanding process. The study followed a comprehensive methodology that included bibliographic research, fieldwork, and experimental testing. These approaches provided valuable insights into the potential reuse of the residue and its applications. The experimental phase focused on formulating a composite material by combining the residual leather dust with epoxy resin as the matrix. Samples were subjected to tensile and hardness tests in the laboratory to determine the mechanical properties of each formulation. Among the tested mixtures, the 40:60 ratio (epoxy resin to leather dust) demonstrated the best mechanical performance. This formulation achieved an elastic modulus of 1.37 MPa, tensile strength of 2.12 MPa, elongation of 5.37%, and a relative hardness of 0.838, showing potential when compared to certain commercial polymers. Given its performance, the proposed application is in decorative interior design products, where the material can serve as the core of decorative modules, with the residue encapsulated to prevent environmental and human exposure. This solution not only adds value to an industrial by-product but also contributes to waste reduction and environmental sustainability in the leather industry.
