The research on the adoption of the maternal role for the care of the premature infant in the home has the purpose of validating the theory of Ramona Mercer, based on which the mother seeks an interrelationship between mother and child, in order to protect the physical well-being and psychological of the newborn, ensuring an excellent quality of life, inserting him into the family and society, above all generating the satisfaction of the parent with the effective fulfillment of his new role. Within the method and materials, the research has a qualitative approach, with a descriptive level with a cross section, time and space were determined, the method was inductive; The data collection was carried out with 15 mothers who went to the hospital to give birth, who were visited in their homes to apply the Mercer theory validation test. The results that were obtained show that the majority of the parents are always totally in agreement that the care and control of their children should be the responsibility of her and of those who share this activity with the couple or relatives, that is to say, the affective interrelationship, motor development, nutrition, among others. The conclusions determine that to validate Mercer's Theory, the instruments must be validated according to the Ecuadorian context; The adoption stages should be analyzed from the attachment, with new challenges and sacrifices, for the mother and family.
