This research refers to the analysis of the use of the Japanese abacus as a didactic tool in the teaching of the sum of three digits with grouping. This resource has been shown, in various studies, to be an effective tool to strengthen mathematical skills, improve the understanding of abstract concepts and promote meaningful learning. The general objective of the study is to determine how the use of the Japanese abacus in the teaching of the sum of three figures is related to grouping in third grade students of Basic General Education of the "Capitán Geovanni Calles" Educational Unit of the Pelileo canton. A mixed methodology was used, integrating qualitative and quantitative aspects. Instruments such as the interview and observation sheet were applied. The population was made up of third grade students and a mathematics teacher. The results showed significant progress in the use of the Japanese Abacus, highlighting its effectiveness as a teaching resource for teaching addition with grouping. The majority of students were able to complete the evaluated indicators with ease, reflecting positive performance. However, a small group faced difficulties or required help, underscoring the importance of providing personalized support. It is concluded that integrating the Japanese abacus as a teaching resource is innovative in the classroom, not only to improve academic performance, but also to enrich the teaching-learning process in mathematics.
