    Cambios en la citología vaginal y alteraciones conductuales en perras esterilizadas del trópico en fase de estro

    This study investigates changes in vaginal cytology and behavioral alterations in spayed female dogs in estrus, with a focus on a tropical context. Cytological análisis was performed on a sample of spayed female dogs, revealing that none of the animals showed parabasal or intermediate cells, while 64% showed a predominance of superficial cells, indicating an active estrus phase. Forty percent residual folicular activity was observed, suggesting prolonged estrogen exposure, which correlates with receptive behavior towards males and other clinical signs associated with estrus. Additionally, all female dogs showed traces of blood and 56% exhibited vaginal discharge, consistent with proestrus, while the low prevalence of neutrophils reinforces the absence of infections. These observations, combined with the tropical context where cycles are more frequent and prolonged, suggest that environmental factors could influence residual ovarian activity, even after sterilization. The results of this study indicate that ovarian remnant syndrome may be a determining factor in the clinical signs observed in the animal's behavior, despite having been spayed. This study, therefore, contributes significantly to the understanding of vaginal cytology and behavioral manifestations in spayed bitches in the tropics, offering important implications for veterinary practice and highlighting the need for more careful management of reproductive health in these animals
