This project is based on the design, construction and testing of an electronically controlled thermostatic expansion valve used to regulate the superheat at the evaporator outlet in a cooling system. This refrigeration system consists of a prototype working with R404A, designed in order to analyze the dynamic behavior of expansion valves. This study also covers the construction of the experimental setup. From a theoretical point of view, heat transfer in the various components of the system was studied in order to determine the operating point of the installation. In addition, the expansion valve inner sectional area was estimated in order to be coupled with the compressor-operating curve. The results of the present study compare the overheating vs. time, evaporator pressure vs. time and temperature evaporator vs. time of expansion valve and the electronically controlled valve. Based on those results it has been concluded that the electronically controlled valve properly regulates the overheating at the evaporator outlet, although the valve setup and control algorithm need to be improved.
