Abstract

This research work reflects on the thin line that separates the erotic from the sexually explicit in photography, with special attention to the female body and the way it has been historically represented from a gaze that often responds more to desire than to artistic expression, through the analysis of different covers of Playboy, an iconic magazine in contemporary visual culture, we observe how eroticism is constantly constructed and negotiated between what is shown and what is suggested, always leaving room for the imagination, but also revealing tensions between the intimate, the public and the commercial. What this work proposes is not only an aesthetic or technical study, but a deeper look at how the female body becomes a stage for multiple discourses, the body becomes a text that can be read from the desire, from the provocation, but also from the power that implies being observed, erotic photography, in this sense, is not an innocent visual genre: burdened with years of tradition, of censorship, of freedoms and also of controversies, understanding its codes what it shows, what it insinuates, becomes fundamental to understand how the notion of the erotic is constructed today. Throughout the visual analysis, it is evident that Playboy covers, from their most classic versions to the most recent ones, have changed their forms but not always their purposes, some images choose to suggest rather than show, betting on a flirtatious, elegant or even artistic aesthetic; others, however, are closer to the explicit without crossing the limits at all, that is where the point of interest of this research lies: In that ambiguous space where the image does not quite define itself as art, nor as provocation, nor as marketing, but feeds on all three. This work seeks to invite us to look more carefully from other perspectives, not only to see beautiful bodies, well lit and with studied poses, but to understand what is behind each image, what discourses are activated, to whom they are addressed and what impact they have on the way we conceive the erotic, because the erotic, in the end, is not only in the exposed skin, but in the intention with which it is looked at and with which it is represented
