Abstract
Description
The study analyzed the determinants of business development in small and mediumsized enterprises from the manufacturing and commercial sectors of Tungurahua, with the aim of identifying how they influenced productivity, profitability, and sustainability during the years 2016, 2021, and 2023. The research was conducted under a quantitative approach and used secondary data from the Structural Business Survey of the National Institute of Statistics and Census. The analysis was based on descriptive statistics and an econometric model estimated through Ordinary Least Squares, considering total production, operating profit, and total sales as indicators of productivity, profitability, and sustainability, respectively. The results showed that manufacturing firms and larger enterprises achieved better performance across the three analyzed dimensions compared to firms in the commercial sector. At the econometric level, total personnel and total expenses influenced productivity and sustainability, while cost of sales had a direct impact on profitability. Overall, it was concluded that business development in SMEs in Tungurahua depended on efficient human capital management and cost control, with persistent gaps associated with the economic sector and firm size.
