Abstract

The present project develops SenseSpace, a modular sensory piece of furniture designed for children aged three to five at the “Sembrando Huellitas” Early Stimulation Center. This educational setting revealed limitations in tactile stimulation, fine and gross motor activities, child ergonomics, and efficient space use, which justified the need for a safe and adaptable resource aligned with contemporary pedagogical practices. The research began with user analysis, anthropometric measurements, direct observation, and teacher surveys, which showed a constant demand for structured sensory experiences and furniture capable of adjusting heights, reorganizing space, and supporting children’s autonomy. Based on these findings, user-centered methodologies, prioritization matrices, and formal explorations were applied to generate several alternatives, later merged into a Minimum Viable Product. The final design integrates an adjustable table, sensory rollers, and interior organization modules built in eighteen-millimeter melamine, ensuring stability, easy cleaning, and resistance to daily use. Validations with teachers, early stimulation specialists, and children confirmed the suitability of the furniture, highlighting its accessibility, safety, variety of stimuli, and ability to adapt to different educational activities without requiring additional elements. The results demonstrate improvements in children’s autonomous interaction, classroom organization, and the efficiency of pedagogical routines. In conclusion, SenseSpace represents a viable, ergonomic, and functional solution that responds comprehensively to identified needs, strengthens the educational environment, and establishes a solid foundation for future scaled production. This advancement underscores the role of industrial design in creating meaningful learning environments and demonstrates the potential of adaptable sensory furniture to enrich early childhood development across educational contexts.
