The present research seeks to analyze the factors that determine the financial survival of savings and credit cooperatives in Segment 2 in Ecuador. This is because, in Ecuador’s economic context, savings and credit cooperatives play a fundamental role in facilitating access to financial services for groups excluded from traditional banking, such as low-income households, rural populations, and small entrepreneurs who often rely on these institutions as their only source of credit. However, Segment 2 of these cooperatives has shown signs of fragility, reflected in rising delinquency rates, increasing competition from larger financial entities, and persistent difficulties in financial sustainability, which highlights the need for a thorough and updated analysis of their survival. In this context, the financial survival of Segment 2 savings and credit cooperatives in Ecuador during the period 2015–2023 is examined. The study employs a Logit linear probability model to explain the internal and external factors that influence the survival or financial fragility risk of institutions in this segment. The methodology allows for identifying both the structural determinants of financial resilience and the limitations of current management practices. The main findings of the study indicate that administrative efficiency, represented by operating expenses in relation to assets (GA), and return on equity (ROE), have a significant impact on the financial fragility of these entities. Therefore, it is suggested that inefficient management, resulting in high operating expenses and low profitability, negatively affects the cooperatives’ ability to remain solvent, increasing the risk of non-survival. However, variables such as provisions for loan portfolios (PVC) and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth do not show a statistically significant relationship, suggesting that although important, their direct impact on the financial survival of Segment 2 cooperatives may be less relevant compared to internal management factors. In summary, the model highlights that, in order to improve survival probabilities, it is crucial to optimize both internal operational management and the adequate use of favorable macroeconomic conditions. The research contributes to the academic discussion on cooperative finance and provides practical insights for regulators and policymakers, who should strengthen monitoring mechanisms, promote efficient management practices, and design strategies that mitigate risks associated with fragility in this vital segment of the financial system.
